Navigating a course - loses the course and directs to start

First the good news - I have the latest firmware and have found the route recalculation works well. Today I tested it by ignoring a left turn on my route. I took a different road so that I would join up with my planned route a mile further on. The 820 initially asked me to do a U turn but as I re-approached my original route, it realised and directed me back to join that route.

Now the bad news - I have a different problem. On two occasions in the past week, the 820 has briefly said 'Off Course' when I'm not off course. It has then very quickly said 'Proceed to XXX road' (where XXX is the name of a road from much earlier in the course). Even though I am continuing to follow the course, it will not recognise this and simply keeps saying 'Proceed to XXX road'.

I have tried stopping navigation and then re-selecting the course. However, it then still tries to direct me to XXX road and won't seem to recognise that I am actually on the course.

The map continues to move and I can actually see my course on the screen and continue to follow it visually. However, the navigation prompts don't come up and the 'distance to next' etc doesn't work.

Has anyone else experienced this and/ or have a solution?

The first time was 15 miles into a 100 mile sportive - which was particularly annoying.

Thanks

Dave
  • I found this step by step method for setting the 820 on the RWGPS site, I do exactly what they advice and however the unit fails once, my last rides where OK and the routing completes all the track:

There are a few settings we recommend changing on the Edge 820 to give you the best navigation experience.

First, review your Activity Profiles. This allows you to associate different speed/cadence sensors with different profiles, so that way wheel size is always correct. Additionally, it lets you change per-activity routing options, which is useful if you use the 820’s routing system to calculate a route for you (not as helpful for loading pre-planned routes).

Once you have setup your Activity Profiles, let’s move on to navigation specific settings

    -Tap the ≡ icon
    -Got to Settings.
-Go to Activity Profiles and select the activity you wish to customize.
-Scroll down to Navigation then Routing.
-Set Routing Mode to Road Cycling
-Set Calculation Method to Minimize Distance (though Minimize Time shouldn’t be too different)
-Ensure Lock On Road is set to Off.
-You’ll get odd track recordings if you divert from the road at all or cut through a parking lot.
-Select Avoidance Setup and make sure all options are disabled.
-Since we are loading pre-planned routes onto the Edge, we don’t want it recalculating the route on us if it thinks there may be a toll, highway etc.
-Set Recalculation to Prompted or Disabled.
If you lose GPS signal, or go slightly off course for a block or two, with recalculation enabled the Garmin has a tendency to shortcut you to the end of your ride with whatever it feels is the quickest way. This is almost always not what you want! By setting it to prompted, you can choose to recalculate or not.

perhaps I was lucky but I found it worth to try, if a few forum readers do the same and let us know.

I was having some navigation issues with 4.1 using RWGPS .tcx files. I've ridden a couple now with RWGPS .gpx files, gone off course, and the unit handled it. May be early to report that, but FWIW, YMMV.

After more riding and using courses, i can't say above was accurate. I did find that things improved when switching auto-recalculate to 'Prompt'. For some reason the 820 considers the 'No' selection as a 'Automatic"...assuming some programming error. The 'Prompt' worked good until it randomly started recalculating again, then it all went to hell. Map screen locks up, 'dist to next' is random and makes no sense. At least can still follow the blue line. FWIW...was a course I'd done on my 800 and it handled it fine.

Garmin programmers...put away your beer and get back to work.
  • After RWGPS settings: 364 Km without any issue,
4 sms and 2 phone calls showed
    Crossed fingers
  • This is sad, so sad ...
After a 7/8 times doing the same route without no problems, yesterday again the same issue!!!
Return to a street not far from home, no turn by turn, distance to end is fixed to total of the track and no way to restart the same or an other route to my house from there where I was.
By thinking a little it was the first ride after the 5.20 update
    GARMIIIIIIN PLEASE DO SOMETHING !!!!!!!!!!!
  • Same Issue here

    Software 5.20
Naviagtion does work until first or second off route incident.

After that, no way to make the naviagtion work again. No stop and start of navigation, no comming back to the route.
Just on the screen there is still the route. But no correct directions anymore. The only direction is some meters to the second street on the route (XXX), like hairsy said!!

The only thing which works is the redirection to the route if you leave it again. All this directions are ok, but back on the route, no directions anyome, not on the display, not on the telephone!!

    How can this be fixed??:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Same here looses navigation sometimes even when you stay on course!
  • Same with mine. It navigates a route brilliantly until you make any trivial deviation. So if I nip off course for a coffee I cant just rejoin. Most annoying and I haven't figured a work around. I hope they get this fixed soon.

  • An other situation but same issue!
I mention it because now I was not out of track and/or on the wrong way.
Flat tyre! I just stop a few minutes to repair and in the mean time the 820 again and for the X time back to start and Km from 0
Also again I start an other track but on the same road home, no turn by turn, the Km to end where correct a few minutes (5/6) and then again total distance.
I am sure this is ONLY a software problem... come on Garmin wake up and resolve this !!!
  • Do you understand now why i talked about Alpha/beta software?

Same issues plagued the 810 for more then 3 years before they finaly made a reasonable stable version (5.00).
They released 820 and everyting is back to square one.

Since 5.00 on the 810 they messed up again with versions 5.10 and 6.10.... (i'm on 5.00 and stay there, no more upgrade for me because i never know what they screwed up next).

I just hope you don't have to wait another 2 years until things are solved on the 820.

Probably the most stupid question on this forum since years: is it not possible to made the firmware from the 800/810 work on the 820?
I know, I know but OK when you are desparate
