820 Not mounting to PC

My Edge 820 (with both 3.1 and 3.2) has a problem with mounting the PC. When I attach the the cables (as in the Manual) to the unit and then to the PC the 820 just boots to normal funtion and shows the external energy supply is on. This appered just some 10 days ago. Trying around with other USB-outlets sometimes helps. But than aswell the unit boots up and then goes to PC-Mode. This had me (with 3.1) to do a Factory reset, because I had a corrupted Course file on it, which wouldnt let the unit start, but i could neither delete it because i could not mount the unit to the Computer.

Is that a bug or can anybody help me doing better?

  • You can try manually forcing the unit in to mass storage mode.

    Force to Mass Storage:

    • Power the device off
    • Press and hold the lap button while plugging in the USB cable
    • Wait 10 seconds and device should go into mass storage
  • Problem solved hopefully

Thanks a lot, tried that after finding this clue on a cyclist's blog, but would not work.... as long .... as long I used the Garmin USB-Cable..... I tried another cable much thicker and seemingly better, and all problems are solved. :-)) It's always the 10 Cent device blockin a 500 EUR machine....

    Thank You for helping
  • I too have been having issues with the supplied cable, with my Macbook.

Something I had not known previously was that some cables are only meant for charging and others for data transfer. I thought all usb cables were the same, but keep in mind for the future!

I knew that an it was the Garmin820-Cable. Everything OK with the 800-Cable :-)
  • I just got my 820, replacing a 520 and experienced this issue.

I'd been plugging up the 520 to my computer with my Xbox One USB cable with no issue. The 820 would not mount properly (it would show up, but double-clicking wouldn't open the drive) and Garmin Express would never see it.

After trying multiple ports, uninstalling, reinstalling, I tried the Garmin USB cable and magically, it worked.

@bjblackmamba and others, Thanks for the reminder. I work in the computer industry and am very familiar with the electrical characteristics of USB. Some cables are designed only for charging, ie. do not have data transfer capability. I had a problem with my 820 not connecting on either my PC or my new Mac with what I thought was a good cable. Either the cable broke, or my memory of whether it only supported charging has gone by the wayside. With a different cable that came with an Echo Dot, I was able to connect just fine to both platforms. On the Mac, I still need to play around some more to see if the procedure of holding the Lap button during poweron is required.

At any rate, If you have problems, verify your cable supports data transfer (try other cables).

    This saved me, thanks

New forum user. Have had the 820 for awhile now and only just recently started to explore how the WiFi feature was supposed to work. I couldn't get my 820 to see Garmin Express on my Windows PC. Found the holding in lap button trick in order to force mass storage mode and that seemed to work. Where is this cryptic key combination documented?

I had the same problem. I changed the cable, did a factory reset nothing worked until... I turned off the Edge (not sleep mode, off). Then the 820 appeared on the computer desktop and Garmin Connect opened automatically.
