Position jumping back and forth along track.

Riding today I noticed that my position was jumping back and forth along my track on the display, something like 50-60'. It was just noticeable at zoom level of 500' (scale bar on bottom right of screen) and proportionately larger on higher zoom levels. The displayed progress wasn't smooth. It would jump forward to or three times and then jump back once. The track would also cut corners where I hadn't.

Just recording a ride; GSC10, heart rate strap, bluetooth on, no navigation, wifi off.

About 1 hr into the ride the 820 announced it had found my GSC10, though it had been reporting cadence all along. It could have dropped out just before that without me noticing.

If you're talking about the blue line (trail that you leave behind as you ride), yes, same here.
Although it does not affect the track when it's finished and uploaded to Garmin or Strava.

Do you have "Lock on Road" set to On?
  • Off. Home screen, hamburger, Activity Profiles, Road, Navigation, Routing, Lock on Road = Off. This was while simply recording a ride without navigating a course.

It leaves a blue track, but that's not pertinent. My position as indicated by the arrow jumps forward than back ~50-60' continually as I ride. If it affected the recorded activity, the total distance would be something like 50% greater than actual.

I haven't noticed my position jumping around but I'm sure that it is. From your past posts about Mountain biking, I assume we are both riding off road under tree cover. I've found that my recorded line does not follow the mapped trail all the time. Sometimes I'm right on the trail and other times my track (at least on Strava after - I normally don't check my track on the actual device) will cut multiple corners and veer off the trail. This was the same with the 520 I used to own, my Fenix 3 and the new 820 so I just accept it is what it is.

Yesterday I loaded a course and found that navigation worked quite well. The device beeped multiple times to warn of upcoming turns. (although on some turns, it didn't give any warning and it also gave warnings where there didn't seem to be any merging trail or turn to make. But I think this is just an issue w the map network. No big deal because you can see where to go on the map well enough.)

I believe I disabled off course notifications and although I did see a few "off course" notifications on the screen during my ride, the device wasn't beeping at me. So that seemed to work well.

About halfway though my ride I turned off the Nav since I knew where I was going - and then started getting Strava Segment notifications. On at least two segments the edge kept beeping at me in the middle of the segment. I could only look down some of the time but it appeared the 820 was telling me I was "off course" and "segment found". ***This is why I assume my position is also jumping around due to poor GPS signal under tree cover.

I don't think there is a way to disable off course notifications on Strava Segments is there? If not, I'm going to have to turn off tones and only turn them back on when navigating a course.
  • The position is jumping back along my track, not randomly around. It's fairly regular, two jumps forward as I ride then one back about 50' along the track. And this was on a road ride, not mtbing.

okay that is weird - I have not noticed that. I'll take a closer look on my next ride.
