TSS to high on 820 during ride

Hello.

I often use TSS as a tool for me to either limit my training time etc. I've added the TSS field onto one of my screens on my garmin 820 under the road bike profile that has my Quarq. For the last couple of weeks I've noticed that the TSS reading on my garmin will be way more than what my actual TSS really was for that workout. For example, last night I went out and did my intervals and the rest of my workout and looked down at the 1:15 mark and my TSS said something ridiculous like 170. When I got home and my ride uploaded to training peaks my TSS was a lot more accurate @ 95.1. The 95 is what I am usually at for this type of workout. 2 weeks ago I did a pretty long (time wise and distance wise) ride and looked down and my TSS said like 450. I got home and training peaks said 320 which again was more inline with what it should have been.

I've checked the following:
-GC my power FTP is set to 240w
-TP my power FTP is set to 240w
-GC my user weight is correct
-TP my user weight is correct.

So where's the break down at? I'd like to be able to rely on the TSS field on my 820 but it's ridiculously high. Training Peaks is correct. My 820 is way off.

Thanks,

Comb
  • Here are the things that will impact the TSS calculation:

FTP setting, which you have checked, but I would also check it on the Edge and not just in GC.
Activity duration. Are you using auto-pause? Do you stop for periods that are long enough for the power meter to go to sleep with the timer running.
TSS uses NP as part of the calculation. NP should automatically include zero power values in the calculation and should be independent of the of the recording option, but check that the option is set to include zeros.

Weight has no bearing on TSS.

If I had to guess I would suspected that the FTP value in GC is not the same value as you have on the Edge.

Could you post the FIT file for the ride?

    Alan Thanks for your response.

    I found the issue.

The setting on my garmin was wrong. So I guess GC doesn't really push it's settings over to the garmin. Not sure where my garmin got that ftp from but it's fixed now. I appreciate your response.

  • If the value was 200 watts then that is the default value.
