820 for other activities like hiking

Hello,
Does anyone use the 820 for other activities like?
On the weekend I went for a hiking day into the Alps, into a place where there are not a lot of paths, the map is rather simple.
I had my oregon 600 with me and my suunto ambit 2 watch. I did not even switched on the oregon, it was for safety, if I would loose the way, I can find out where I am and where to go. Beside a printed page too. The watch I used mainly to monitor hearth pace and for recording the track and other parameters and later upload to strava.

I was thinking that I could use the 820 for both. That small map would be enough, I would not need to carry the oregon when I'm going to more or less known places.
I know it is a bike device, but are you using it anyway to something other? I guess it should be possible, maybe the strava classification I have to change from cycling to hiking.

?
Thanks,
JG
  • I have only 810 and sometimes i use it for runnig. It's worked, but, not good enough. The GPS is loose the signal - maybe the slow tempo, or whatever. I held it the device in my hand face up, like it would be attached the handlebars. It's ok for me. But i prefer any GPS watch, like FR235, it's fine to both.

Sorry my really bad english. :(
  • I used my old 810 in the pocket of my snowboard jacket while snowboarding all day before in the alps and it worked a treat. I uploaded to strava and changed the activity type like you said. I did not use it to follow any map though but I shouldn't see why it wouldn't work as long as you have the correctly detailed map for where you're going installed.
  • I used my old 705 for cross country skiing and hiking for several years. Two things you want to do when using an Edge for something else. One, turn auto pause off. Two, set the minimum speed as low as possible (I don't think you can set it to zero, but you can set it to 1). Either set the minimum speed in the lowest speed zone to 1, or on an 820 (don't have one), there might be an actual setting. Since bicycles are hard to keep upright if you're going too slow, Edges solve the "accumulate distance due to GPS error while standing still" problem by not recording below a given speed. (Of course, maybe the newer models don't do this. I use an 800 now.)
  • I ported my Hike2 app to the edge 520, and and thinking about porting it to the 820 too.... (It's for both Hiking and walking, and the activites are properly ID'd in Garmin Connect.) There are a few things that aren't counted (like steps and walking cadence), as the Edge isn't a step tracker. ("for bikers that are hikers" :) )

    Hike2 in the App Store

(use "Contact Developer" there if you might be interested in doing a beta test of this on the 820)
  • One thing I've found previously using a 705 and 500 for hiking was that it worked better if I kept in a place where my body wasn't obscuring 1/2 or more of the sky, like it does keeping it in the pocket of my shirt or pants. The 500 was small and light enough that I'd clip it to my hat. The 705 worked well on top of my backpack. Those had no GLONASS. The 820 with GPS & GLONASS should (theoretically) be better as there are ~twice the total satellites.
  • Thanks a lot for all replies, I appreciate. At least to see I'm not alone thinking of that :-)
On September 24-25 I will have a 2 day hiking in the Alps again. For sure I will take the 820, maybe both with the oregon.
    The app sounds interesting!

    Thanks,
    JG

I use the Garmin GPS Forerunner 910XT Quick Release Kit with my 810 and now 820 for hikes and walks. As others have stated turn auto pause off and set the start speed to near 0. On the 810 I have a bike profile set up for "walking", on the 820 I have an activity profile setup the same

    I use it (first 800 than 810 and now 820) for walking\hikking\trailrunning.
But after some of the lattest firmware updates on the 810 it doesnt record the correct distance. It looses about 10%. If i run 20Km, it reports about 18km... same happens on the brand new 820...

Auto pause is off and recording settings set to 1 second.
  • Hello,
Thanks a lot for your replies.

On this weekend I have tried to use the edge 820 in parallel, I thought I write down what I experienced :

    - battery life: very positive surprise! It was in battery save mode, BT off, Wifi off also. I did not used it a lot. Maybe 30min screen use all together. Same way I would use my Oregon. I use it to record and if I would get lost, and sometime to look distance etc. After 18 hours of 2 day use (1.5 rather), I still have 52% of battery. That is a great point! No need to carry replacement battery. I mean, I can not replace anyway, but no need to charge on a hard one day or on a easy/mid level 2 day tour. On the Oregon I have to replace battery about after 10 hours.
    - recording: well, it seems to recorded well the track, on the map it looks fine. Elevation my suunto recorded 1366m ascent for the first day, the 820 recorded 1369m. It is VERY close, I did not expected this close, especially reading other posts with -10% elevation recording (firmware 3.2). BUT, distance is recorded to be 6.85km, which is impossible. The suunto recorded 10.57km, which is right. Something is wrong here, it is way out. I guess it is about the auto pause, which is supposed to be off, but I will see tomorrow again. A strange thing is that on the second day, for what it recorded, the 9.2km seems right.
    - useage: problematic. I could not find a way to lock the screen. I hope there is. Any time I picked it up from my rucksack's pocket, it had a strange screen on it. On the second day the recording got stopped in 2/3 way. This is bad. Now I think about to find a way to lock the screen, and to make a holder what I can hang on the top front strap of my rucksack. So, I can have a look at it any time. Just like I use the Oregon, when I'm going on unknown route.

I will go to another hike soon, I want to prepare a holder before. I would not like to use it as a watch, rather on the rucksack's chest strap.
I will report again what I found, If you have idea in the meantime, let me know please.

    Regard,
    JG

Long press the power button, then you get three options on your screen, of which one is.... lock screen.
