Breadcrumb Course riding?

I have not yet seen any topics that discuss the ability of riding courses similar to which was the standard on the older Edges (305, 500, 800), so just following the line on the map without any TBT agains virtual partner and having the ability to put in you own coursepoints. It took more than a year for this funcitonality to become available on the 810 and 1000. The course recalculation issues with the 820 make me fear the worst.

Can anyone tell me wether this functionality is availbale on the 820?
  • You can turn off course guidance when following a course - is this what you mean? This will turn off the TBT instructions. I always plan and upload my courses on the desktop.

From the home page - Navigation > courses > saved courses > menu bar > course options > turn guidance - select 'off'.

What I've done to accomplish something like this is: Navigation, Saved Courses, tap the course, Settings, turn on Always Display. This will display the course on the map in the color you choose. There's no course calculation or anything. It just show up on the map. It'll always be there until you turn it off.
  • I do the same for MTB turn on always show course then when I toggle to the map screen the course is overlayed on the map.

Yes. It took me a while to discover it. Just switch off turn by turn guidance under navigation / courses / option icon.

  • Riding of a course based on a track, without navigation has the big advantage that it is reproducible for any GPS and is map independent. So if you ride in a group everybody gets the same information.
This can be helped by adding course points with messages to turn left/right. In fact this is superior to navigation, which Garmin advocates heavily, but most of the times results in confusion when riding with a group.

With the old EDGE 705 this was very easily done.
With the EDGE 820 this is also possible, but requires a little more effort.

    It goes as follows:

Go to Training>Race an Activity>Saved Courses.

Go to the options block/// at the bottom
    Off Crs. Warning: on
    Turn Guidance: off
    Back

Choose the course you want to ride, after loading the course, scroll to the bottom SETTINGS:
    Always Display: on
    Color: Select one
    Course Points: on

    Back and RIDE!

    That's all.

If by any reason the ride is not found when you're on the course, then you can start RIDE again, without losing your data.
  • I agree Freek.

I personally advice to use the coursepoints differently. When Riding a Cyclosportive, for example La Marmotte, I will always make a course that has the important route points defined as course points. For La Marmotte this would be: Top of Glandon, Water at food of Telegraphe, Summit Of Telegraph, Food in Valoire etc. etc. When you are riding this course it will show you the next 5 course points inlcuding the distance to get there and the amount of estimated riding time to get there. So if you still have water in you bottles and you are passing a water refill point, you can see immediately how far you need to go to the next refill. Also if there is a point where you need to pass before a certain time ( In la Marmotte this is base of Alp D'huez before 6pm ) you can see in real time if you are still on track or not.

The screen I mostly use for this functionality looks like this, but instead of the Turns I can show symbols for summits, food etc. :

It seems to me that it does not work today.
