zooming map in/out is slow as death

zooming when using map of France and tiny bits of neighboring countries (open street map) is terribly slow... would changing to a partial map of just the area I'm riding around or the official (and pricy) Garmin maps for France speed things up?

there are actually 2 issues :

1- it takes way too many presses to zoom out sufficiently to a zoom level that allows me to see what I actually want.
2- refresh takes a *** lot of time (I stare at a blank screen for long MINUTES in the process !)

I'm already using the low detail settings and right now it's so slow when zooming between a detailed view where I can see the next turn and the general map of the area where I'm riding (so I know where I am) that I use google map on my phone for the general overview... which is definitely not the way I thought things would work when I got the device...
  • When I zoom out, the map that was visible shrinks down to the current zoom level and there's white space around it that takes some time to fill in. If I zoom out 4 times in quick succession, it takes about 5-7 seconds for the white perimeter to fill in. This is with the US OSM set at Normal or More Detail. That's kinda slow, but not horrible.

Panning is a little slow too. But also annoying is that when zooming in, it doesn't zoom into what was centered but to some point to the East (right?) of it so that you have to pan over again.

thanks, Looigi. that's what I witness when I zoom only 4 times too...

the issue is that I actually was trying to go from whatever the automatic zoom is when riding at around 30kph (probably 100 or 50m scale) down to the 8km scale in order to see a portion big enough of a 120km loop so that I could see where I could cut short, which requires a dozen button presses (way too much, really wish there was more gap between 2 zoom levels)...

I just tested doing so right now (at home, after disabling automatic zoom level since I thought it might be part of the issue) and the speed is a bit random.
at first it was so slow the backlight (set to 15s on my device) went off 3 times before I gave up and decided to restart the device, second time I did it in several times (press 4 times, wait for refresh to complete, repeat 3 times) and it worked well enough (probably took 30-40 seconds to get to the zoom level I needed though: still too slow) third time tried to do 6 presses at once, map refreshed after about 10seconds, but the track never reappeared...

something is buggy, not sure wether it's the device or the map I am using (made the mistake to buy the 820 in the US, hence it came with US maps... didn't know Garmin sells maps if you want to use their device outside of country of purchase...) will try with a smaller map or different detail level... :(
  • Definitely. I've rarely had success trying to do something like you describe on any Edge device between the limited size and resolution of the screen and lag in zooming an panning. I'd just whip out the cellphone, or in a few cases, a paper map.

allright looigi, thanks for your input !
  • I have an ancient 800 and zoom and pan not-infrequently. It's not fast but it's fast enough. That's with any map.

I don't seem to have the problems you are describing. I assume that the 800 is slower than the 820. (It's possible that the 820 has a problem that the 800 doesn't.) If different maps were slower, I should have seen it on the 800.

It's possible that you are zooming too much. With more experience, you might find you don't need to do that as much. Keep in mind that the Garmins are much slower computers than smartphones (don't expect Garmins to be as fast).

The newer Garmin units come with "Garmin Cycle" maps, which are Garmin's version of the OSM maps that are readily available free.

There is no way (that I know of) of getting the Garmin OSM maps for other regions.

It doesn't matter because the other OSM maps are pretty-much the same.

The issue with the Garmin "City Navigator" (CN) maps is that you have to re-buy them to get updates.
  • ...will try with a smaller map or different detail level... :(

As it turns out, the big *.img map files are actually a collection of smaller map files. Using a smaller map probably won't help.

Less detail would be faster (but your issue seems to be more than that).

Note that you want to enable the "world basemap" (which makes drawing at low zoom levels faster because it has less detail).

Thanks for the tip Dpawlyk, I actually had disabled all maps but the map from France I downloaded from the site http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ thinking disabling everything would speed things up... I will switch it back on and see how it does...

... also, something a bit off topic: any chance you (or anyone else knowledgeable ;) ) know why I don't seem to be able to find Paris, France when searching by street address with the map I downloaded? I didn't have this issue with the Edge Touring I had previously (but this one I bought here... replaced it by the 820 thinking it would be a lot faster, but actually, not so much :p ).
The Zipcode doesn't work, and when I enter "Paris" it only offers "paris-l'hopital" or "parisot" which are in different regions, and the only way to find my own address is to search the whole of France for it (starting by typing "avenue" in full, the abbreviation "av" or "ave" is not accepted...)

hopefully switching "world basemap" back on might help...

The basemap only has image information (no routing or addresses/locations).
