Can anyone explain the Maps to me

I have just received my 820.

Just trying to work out what the maps are and how they work. The 820 came with 4 maps installed, all of which are enabled (Standard Basemap, Garmin Cycle Map, Edge DEM Map, Garmin Geocode Map).

Should I disable any and will this give any performance increase? I know the basemap is pretty much useless so i'll disable this, but what about the DEM Map and Geocode maps? What are they for?

Thanks in advance.
  • DEM is the Digital Elevation model. Geocode map helps with addressing. Both should remain enabled. I'm not sure what you mean by 'performance increase' but keeping them enabled shouldn't affect anything.
  • Thansk for the reply SUSSAMB.

I was just wondering if the maps screen would perform better if any were disabled but thanks to your reply I will leave them all enabled.

As per the response from sussamb above, leave them on. I turned them off apart from the Garmin Cycle map, thinking that would be all I need, but then a couple of days later spent a frustrating 15 minutes wondering why the 820 refused to be able to find info for any address I put in when testing it's navigation skills. Switched the Geocode map back on and eveything started to work. It won't search and find an address without it so it seems.

It would be good if Garmin explained this somewhere, or maybe I've just missed it.
