Have Garmin updated Edge 520 firmware to allow crank length to be set yet?

I've got Powertap P1 pedals and run 165mm cranks - for these to give accurate data crank length must be set correctly at the head unit. My Edge 500 is starting to come to the end of it's useful life (its pretty battered) and I'm contemplating buying a new Edge 520. DC Rainmaker's site says that Garmin are going to update their firmware for 520 but I'm not going to invest in their product unless it's imminent.

When I paired my power meter to the 520, I was able to set the crank length. I believe it asked right away to set it, and you can change it afterward by going into the sensor details.

The same applies with wheel circumference when it pairs to a speed or speed/cadence sensor.

    Hope this helps.

I've done two rides with the 520 (after coming from the 500 as well), and I'm very happy with the unit. Couple minor wishes (would like to have beeps for start/stop/auto pause and alerts, but not keypresses, etc. Unlike the 500 it's all or nothing, hopefully this will be fixed in a fw update...) but overall I think it's a great unit, especially coming from the 500.

That's only for Vector, not for 3rd party units yet. There wasn't a date specified on when the 520 will get the update, only that it will. I'll press again for a timeframe this week at Interbike.

Ah. Yes, I am using Vector pedals. Sorry, wasn't aware that other PMs wouldn't behave the same. My bad.

I'm getting set to purchase a power meter--most likely a Stages. I'm also planning on upgrading my Edge 500 to something that will handle mapping and have other newer features. Very strongly considering the Edge 520 and in doing some basic research I ran across this thread. Am I correct that Garmin does NOT SUPPORT setting the proper crank arm length for Stages and other non-Garmin products?

If so, the absolute arrogance of this company just astounds me. I have 175mm cranks and apparently need to change the default on whatever head unit I end up with.

I hope I'm wrong, but if I'm not, this is close to pushing me out of the Garmin "family" for good. Any alternative recommendations?

  • A crank length setting is not required for Stages. It is only required for pedal based or cleat based systems that need to know the length of the crank in order to determine torque. Garmin has made a software update that added support for all power meters that support the appropriate ANT+ messages. This was released as part of the 3.0 update.
  • it's not only that you can't change crank length - it always reverts to default.
I have BePro Pedals which can be set via USB connection - as soon as the Edge detects them, it's back to 172.5...

Could please somebody explain me how to downgrade to 5.20?

Found it also in the sensors details, will ask to connect to the power meter in order to see more details, and you have to select the " check mark" in the menu after inputting the new length in order for it to be saved and not revert to the default .
