strava live segments

Do you have to have premium membership of Strava to get the live segments working properly?
I've extracted a few favourite local segments off Strava and manually uploaded them into the device segments folder, and they do appear to register when i get near them, but not had chance to fully test this out yet.
  • OK, now tested, no Premium Strava membership is needed, maybe this is only to auto transfer starred segments to the device. Any segments manually extracted and loaded in the the Edge 520 do show up when you are close enough to the start.

how are you manually extracting them?
  • I use this site, after starring the segments I want, I click on them and enter the url into this:
    http://gniza.org/segments/
I then download them to the mac and upload into the Garmin segments folder.

You get 3 months of Strava premium included with the 520. I don't know what happens once the premium runs out.
  • If you buy your Garmin 520 via Strava website and you live in the US you may get 3 months of premium membership. I bought mine in UK from Evans cycles, it has no link with my Strava account and no voucher to redeem or similar to claim this.
  • some more playing about with the 520 tonight, cannot get the garmin unit to update segments when i 'star' new segments in strava - is this because I don't have premium account with strava?
  • Correct. The Garmin/Strava integration requires that your Strava account be a premium account.

I had no link either, but was on a 1 month trail when I bought the 520 (in Holland).
i asked strava-helpdesk how to activate the 3 months and they extended my trialperiod to 3 months.

About the need to have strava premium: I read a post on this forum that someone managed to load segments to his device without premium.
don't know if it works, but i hope there will be more free options in the future as strava premium doesn't have much extras for me (other than live segments and the possibility to download gpx/tcx's)

Yep that was me, you can extract any segment from Strava with a number of different tools available from various people on the internet, [I'm using

You should upload them to the NewFiles folder, not the segments folder. Probably it doesn't really matter (as the unit itself most likely just moves them), but that's the correct way of doing it.
