Strava Route to 520?

I have a fair few Strava routes - can I get these into the 520?
  • I am still a little sure of whether it is best to use GPX or TCX routes on my 520, despite reading a number of the forum posts. I have downloaded a more detailed basemap per dcrainmakers instructions so would like to utilise this if possible.

I haven't used routes before, so sorry for my lack of knowledge, but what is the best way to go and why? The route has been created on Strava

    Many thanks
  • To get the full functionality including elevation and course warnings you should take your Strava route and then import it into BikeRouteToaster, then do an export to tcx. Then put this file in the 'NewFiles' directory on the 520.

Strava exports as gpx file with no elevation data and (i think) no turn points. BikeRoute Toaster can add these along with a more realistic pace which you can tweak according to normal cycling speed on the flat, up gradients and downhill. I always import as a tcx now.
  • Thanks for the replies. I use a Strava TCX file today and got a route marked on the map that i needed to visually follow as no cues. I didn't look at elevation. I will try what you suggest next time

Can you try not to follow the route at some point and see how the 520 behaves. Map freeze or not? Thx a lot!!

Yes you can. Trade them from Strava as GPX information. Link your 520 to your pc and fall the course information into the 'New Files' directory. Detach 520 convert off/on, and you'll then see all of your programs on the Forerunner.

    TCX works better

I try to put directly a gpx on folder new files from 520 and it not working. TCX created or converted with GPSies works perfectly !!

No turn by turn directions, anybody has a sollution?

I have ver 3.0 and the openstreet maps installed as per DC Rainmaker instructions. I downloaded new routes created on Strava in the newfile folder, tried bot gpx and tcx.
I can see the course but no tbt directions. Sometimes it just draws a line to the end of the course. Any help is appreciated! :)

  • Just to make sure that their is no confusion on terminology here.

TBT (Turn-By-Turn) instructions are instructions that are generated by the Edge when it loads the course file for use. These are built by looking at the shape of the course. If you have a routable map then the Edge may use information from that map depending on the model of Edge you are using. By default TBT is switched off on the Edge 520. Control for this feature is under "Training" -> "Courses" -> "Course Options" -> "Turn Guidance".

Course Points - are points of interest that are stored in the course file that the Edge reports when it gets to each point location. A course point could be a turn instruction. Course points need to be in the file that is loaded in the NewFiles folder. The only formats that support course points are tcx and FIT files. The file will only include course points if the site that is generating the file includes them. Files produced and exported from Strava do not contain course points.

Here are some sites that do add course points for turns:
    www.ridewithgps.com
    www.plotaroute.com
    www.bikeroutetoaster.com

Alan, thank you! I did not know all that. It definitely sheds some light into how routes work on 520. I will try enabling routing and also creating routes on the sites you mentioned. Thanks again!
