Garmin Connect or other Application to Manage E520 Settings

It strikes me as odd - it being 2015 - that Garmin Connect (or Express, or Mobile) does not appear to have the functionality at the desktop to manage all of the settings (apart from the meagre few it does) on the attached device. I would like to be able to:

  • preview all the data pages (simulate the device?)
  • configure data fields for pages
  • edit names using a keyboard instead of picking one letter at a time from lists
  • avoid using the tiny buttons on the device for any setup activity beyond yes/no responses

If GC does have such functions, I hope someone can reveal to me how to use it; if it doesn't, it would be great for Garmin to provide for same. In the meantime, is there a third party app which might do it?

Better question: why do I have to hit a dozen button presses to change my weight, instead of GC updating it for me? Seriously, there are less button presses if I want to change my gender on the watch/gps than there is for weight. I have the 520 and vivoactive, and it's really annoying.

That's not true, for records, zones and personal info, you go to GC and hit send to device. I did this yesterday to set mine up.

The first point though is true - took me forever to copy my screens from my 510.
  • I believe that could have actually just copied the screen files from the Garmin\Sports folder on the 510 and placed them in the Garmin\NewFiles folder on the 520 and the 520 would have imported them.
  • Thanks Alan. That's a great starting tip.

Can those files be manipulated with an external program (e.g. Notepad or Word) that you know?

I might have a play and perhaps write an android or PC utility....
  • The files are .fit files, and this is a binary format, so no go with regular text editors. You can download the FIT SDK, but I believe the format of the messages in these specific files are not documented. At least not all of them (screen setup, for instance).

I agree that to have a desktop (or mobile) editor for all device settings would've been great, and no doubt technically feasible. Provided one has (or aquires) knowledge of the actual format. Reverse engineering is always an option, but rather tedious.
  • Correct the activity profiles are in FIT format and the FITSDK does not define the message types used for all the content.

You can clone one profile to use as the basis for a second profile. So if you want to 2 profiles that are quite similar you can do the following.

    Create the first profile. (Profile1)
Backup up Profile1 to you PC.
Now on the Edge rename Profile1 to Profile2
Make the changes you want to make to Profile2
Restore Profile1 to the Edge by copying the backed up file to the Garmin\NewFiles fodler

    P1 pedals and garmin 520

I have just brought both the above but need a patch apparently to set at 175mm crank length, but I don't seen able to get the settings.fit file to copy here??? any ideas???
  • Post your Garmin\Settings.fit file and I can make the change for you.
  • could you give me a hand editing my 520 odometer reading?

    Alan,

you seem to be an expert with these fit files. I'd love to set my odometer values to include my old miles from my 500. I've read the threads on how to do this, but so far have been unable to figure out where to pop in the new value in the CSV file...

Could I post my totals.fit file for you to fix?

    thanks,

    David
