Edge 520 not showing distance, total ascent and descent

I received my brand new Edge 520 yesterday. I configured it. Today, on my first ride, my distance does not show up on screen as well as Total ascent and descent. These fields stay at 0. The unit seems to freeze when i either save or discard a ride. Also, live track does send the emsil, but does not work...i already miss my Edge 510. I have the firmware version 2.30 installed on it.

If distance stays at zero it sounds like it isn't recording. Do you have it configured to take speed from a speed sensor that isn't working or isn't paired with the unit?
Plug it in and see if you have any files in the Activities folder.

GREGF83, i dont think so, but how can i verify this? The funny thing is that my Strava segments where working fine. I do not have any speed sensor, I thought i was only using the GPS for the speed/distance like i use to do it with my 510. The speed works fine. Thanks

Speed and distance come from the same source. In fact I think distance comes first and speed is then calculated from change in distance over time. So if you are getting speed displayed the distance/speed source is not the issue. Have you been able to save any activities and get the FIT files?

There will be no distance or elevation gain until the activity is started. The button layout is different on the 520. Could you be pressing the wrong button to start? But that wouldn't explain the freezing so it could be a bad 520. I would call Garmin support.
  • This might be a really strange question - but do you have the timer running?

OK, i think i found the source of my problems with my new Edge 520. Yesterday after my ride, it froze again when trying to save the ride...i made me think...the Edge is trying to write somewhere but it cant. So, i check the directory structure under GARMIN on my new device. I had a file called ACTIVITES, but no directory. So, i created one...and Voila, it seems to work. It saves the files and when i ride, it shows me the distance as well as the Ascent gain, etc. I dont know why the directory was not present. I have reset the device to factory default many times during the weekend. I would have thought that the proper directory structure would have been validated in the process. Thanks

Thank you for letting us know how you fixed the issue. I had the same problem with my Garmin 510 and when I created the activities folder, the issue was resolved
