garmin always turns on when connected to USB

So, when I plug my 520 into USB to charge it always seems to turn on and stay on.

Not talking about the data connection page either (I get that when I turn it off while still connected).

Is there some setting to control that?
  • It might be a timing issue with USB port. You can force the Edge straight in to mass storage mode if you hold the lap button down when you connect the USB cable to it.

Are you using a USB hub?
  • Yes I am using a hub.

I also notice it when my computer goes to sleep, it seems to wake up the 520 and it just stays on...
  • It also happens when plugging the 520 into a USB wall charger. No reason for it to turn on when plugging it into a charger.

510 works like that as well. I think Garmin devs would need some usability guys :)

This is beyond annoying, it wakes up my Varia tail light and drains the battery in my heart rate monitor, not to mention it will reduce the life of the screen, ect. for it to be on for hours and hours while charging. The only solution I can see is to check if its fully charged and if it is, unplug it. This is something I do not have to do with ANY OTHER DEVICE I OWN. I'm coming from a Wahoo, and they do not do this, and work flawlessly, regretting my switch.
  • Yes, it's the No 1 annoyance, closely followed by the touch of the power button bringing up the change back-light brightness option. Unhappy users are tending to move to Wahoo. I'm curious as to why you've moved from Wahoo.
  • This is just a usability fail of Garmin. It's the same with Garmin Edge 520, Garmin Edge 520 Plus and Garmin 530 (amongst others, but these are the ones I checked).

When the device is switched off, and you connect it to USB for charging the battery, the device will turn on and stay on.

But that's not all! The same will happen when you disconnect the power cable!

    This is so annoying, really.
