Uploading to Garmin Connect after Ride

Hi all, this is my first post here!

I am getting to grips with my Garmin Edge 520, it's my first Garmin device and overall I'm pretty impressed. There are a couple of feature requests I would put in i.e. being able to have a Garmin Course and still use Strava Live Segments and also perhaps be able to enable/disable the segment from Garmin Connect and set the Segment target (i.e. PR, KOM, Goal etc.) from Garmin Connect - as well as other peoples requests to be able to set a default.

But my main issue at the moment is after a ride my data is not automatically uploading to Connect. I have my phone paired, and it downloads updated segments and displays texts and missed calls etc., but it wont upload the ride even though it states 'Ride Uploaded'. If I try to upload again from the 520 it says upload failed.

The rides will upload if I plug the device in to my computer but I thought this was possible via my phone and Mobile Connect App?

Any help appreciated.
  • In Garmin Connect Mobile there is an option under the device settings to automatically upload a ride. Is that enabled?
  • Yes it is set as Auto Upload. I think the issue is that the ride doesn't upload to Garmin Connect Mobile. Any ideas?
  • Yes that is set to 'Auto Upload'. I think the issue is that the ride is not appearing in Garmin Connect Moblie

I have the exact same issue. I can upload with a usb cable but GMC uploads always fail. I have tried everything. Deleted and reinstalled the app, toggled various settings on and off and still no go. GMC even says sync completed but then the 520 says "upload failed" and nothing shows up on Garmin Connect. Seems to be a common issue across most Garmin devices. Sure hope it gets fixed in an update in the next few weeks or this thing is heading back to the store.

Out of curiosity, what kind of phone are you using. No problems here with an Android MotoX. All the rides upload within a minute.
  • I have an iPhone6.

I've just looked over at the GCM forum and notice that it might be quite a common issue. I will try removing app, deleting pairing etc. etc. to see if that works - but I'm not holding out much hope!

I am using an iphone 5s. Seems that the iphones aren't working well with GMC. Here's what I have tried:

    - reinstalling app
    - resetting network settings on phone
    - deleting the phone and reconnecting
    - turning off auto upload and manually syncing
    - using only BT or BTLE connected
    - over wifi only or LTE only

These are all of the suggestions that I have found for other Garmin devices and an iphone that won't upload. If anyone has made it work, please pass on the info.
  • OK, so I have mine working now.

    I did the following:
    1. Deleted GCM app from iPhone 6
    2. Deleted both Bluetooth connections to 520 on iPhone 6
    3. Deleted Bluetooth connection to iPhone on Garmin Edge 520
    4. Deleted all Rides from Garmin Edge 520
    5. Rebooted both Garmin Edge 520 and iPhone 6
    6. Re-installed GCM on iPhone 6
    7. Setup Garmin Edge 520 Bluetooth to connect to my iPhone 6. Make sure both the BT and BTE connections are made.
    8. Changed setting in GCM >Devices>Device Settings>Auto Upload back to On. (When you reinstall it puts it back to Off by default)

That's it. Everything auto uploading now. Let's see if it stays working!
  • If the 520 is anything like the 1000, the steps you outlined will work for a ride or three but then you'll start getting problems again. I gave up trying to use BT with my iPhone on my 1000. I've been checking here to see if the 520 is any better. When will Garmin fix this?

That did it! I added a reset device to factory settings step. The only thing I can think of that messes it up is that I initially connected my phone without GMC installed on it...I then downloaded the app. Maybe having the app first makes the connection better?
Anyway, thanks for the assist! I can sleep easier now! :-)
