First ride. HR drops to specially 63. (HRM-RUN)

Check out my first activity.
HR drops to 63. The strap is the Garmin HRM-RUN. Less than a year old. Works fine on other garmin devices.
What's going on?
  • It shows a value of 63 while recording. I was just able to reproduce here.

I used a couple of other models of HRM that I have and only the HRM-Run was causing this issue so I need to dig a little deeper in to what data the HRM-Run is sending.
  • Unlike most HRMs the HRM-Run is sending information about the battery status using common data page 82. The value 63 is actually the battery status and course battery voltage information.

It will require a software change to fix this. I have sent my findings in to Garmin.

Yep. I can confirm that "63" is displayed on the screen. It basically flickers between 63 and my actual HR.
    Thanks Alan for your work.
Just for kicks, I will use my scosche rhythm plus HR arm strap on my morning ride tomorrow.

First off, you are seeing the 63 bpm drop out on your 920 .fit file too (though admittedly only twice), so it's not your 520 at fault. How much less than a year old is your HRM strap? If it's getting close to a year my bet is the battery is dying (the HRM manual estimates a year of use), which may also explain why your 920 is not having as many dropouts if it is either slightly nearer to the HRM or is slightly more capable at picking up weak signals. Stick a new battery in the HRM and see if that fixes it.
  • I used a new battery in the HRM-Run that I used for my test. The value 63 actually contains information that the battery is OK and that the course battery voltage is 3 volts. Even if the battery were low the 520 should not be treating a battery status message as an HR value.

I will take a look at the data in the 920 file.
  • The 2 values in the 920 FIT file I think are correct. They are right at the start of the activity and the HR ramps up from there.
    63 63 67 69 72 75 76 79 80

Sorry I now see that there are 5 values of 63 in total. The other 3 do look wrong as they are bounded by much higher values.

More weird data. This time on the 920. Took a couple minute break at the half way point. HR didn't seem to do much. I can assure you that it should be much higher.

  • Getting 63 here as well

I have the same exact thing happening with my 520 and HRM-Run strap. The 520 works perfectly with other straps but with the Run strap it bounces between my actual HR and 63.
  • Ditto here. My 520 keeps fluctuating between my true heart rate and 63 when using my HRM-run strap. This is evident at the time and clearly in recordings after the activity. The strap still works fine when paired with my forerunner 620, both during the activity and in the recording afterwards.

From reading the rest of this thread I'm going to try the 520 with a different strap to see if its just the HRM-run causing this.

First ride with my 520. Same thing. Guess i will try the new swim tri hrm next ride. Has anyone talked to garmin about this? Has anyone tried with a different HRM? I guess the good news is that this is not a one off thing.....and if everyone is experiencing it, Garmin should be more eager to remedy the issue. What HR monitor comes with the 520 Bundle??
