Check out my first activity.
HR drops to 63. The strap is the Garmin HRM-RUN. Less than a year old. Works fine on other garmin devices.
What's going on?

Will add a 'me too' to the list

Adding a Me too to the list. Have a Garmin Fenix3 and just bought a 520 so that I could have a better screen/more datapoints displayed at once while on the bike.. So I have purchased $1000+ worth of garmin equipment THIS YEAR

I am seeing the same drop to 63, if I use my F3 alone the HRM-Run (that was bundled with the F3) works just fine. I add the Edge 520 to the mix and my charts show very frequent drops to BOTH the F3 and the Edge520. Edge 520 alone, frequent drops...

I am feeling like an alpha tester, but had to pay full retail for the privilege of getting buggy 'alpha' software. Some of the bugs that I have seen so far should never past a basic sanity verification so that it could be called a beta... When you currently sell 3 or 4 straps, it is unacceptable to not support your OWN suite of products. It is like they don't do any verification before saying 'ship it!'. If this was third party hardware, I could see an out, but come on Garmin, test your own stuff with your own stuff! This is not a deep bug, this is something that if they would have done basic testing they would have uncovered.

Thank god I buy most of my Garmin stuff at REI and have a year to send it back.....
  • Same here lots of drops on a ride, made my heart rate data for this workout totally unusable.
Come on garmin, how can be that your best heart rate strap is not compatible with your new edge!
I´m thinking on returning my edge 520 for a refund. Tired of garmin´s bugs!
  • I've been continuing these discussions with a nice chap called Tim via email

He asked for a bit more evidence of what I mentioned in my previous post about the Edge 520 affecting the HR readings being recorded by the 920XT whilst both are used at the same time. I therefore provided two .fit files - a jpeg of which I have attached here.

The top graphic shows 3mins on my indoor wind trainer whilst using my HRM-Run with the Edge 520. As acknowledged by all, this shows constant drops to 63bpm

The bottom graphic shows 5mins on my indoor wind trainer using my 920XT whilst paired to the same HRM-Run. The first 3mins are the same as the 3mins shown in the Edge520 graphic and as you can see there are constant drops to 63bpm. The final 2mins of this exercise were after after I stopped and turned off the 520 unit. As you can see, the interference has now gone and there are no more HR drops in that final 2mins.

Feel free to contact Garmin to add to this evidence from devices other that the 920XT if you like - reports on this thread seem to show that the Fenix 3 and FR620 have the same issue.

I have same problem with 520. HR drops to 63 roughly ones in five minutes. I tested with my Fenix 3. No problems and the hr-line looks solid.
What should I do with this? The readings are useless at the moment.

  • As an FYI, I tested out the HRM-TRI with the 520 and I don't have any issues with heart rate like I did with the HRM-RUN. So it's one way to get running dynamics while running with the ability to also use the same heart rate strap with the 520. Too bad I had to buy it just because my HRM-RUN wasn't working with the 520.

I finally found the old HRM from my FR610 and paired it With the 520 - it worked as expected (no low 63-drops). I can also confirm what others have experienced when using the HR-RUN strap - it also affects the recording on my FR920 when I use both Edge 520 and FR920! Some kind of serious interference from the Edge 520.

My idea was to replace my old FR610 with the FR920 bundle while ordering the Edge 520 unit only packacge and utilize the HRM-RUN strap as my only HRM.

A little off topic, but I also see an issues when having multiple data screens in a profile - the 520 seems to automatically turn to the next page whenever entering a segment. The workaround is to only have one data screen in the profile. Even then, the Live Segment screen disappears, but it can be brought back by pushing Up or Down.

The most annoying issue right now for my part, is that the 520 does not synchronize my HR Zone data from Connect. It syncs my HR profile, but ut does not convert them to the correct Zone. And the manual way of changing the Zones, is less than intuitive. This has to be fixed.

And it's rather disappointing that Garmin has not yet released any updates for the 520 - I can't really understand why based on all the feedback from the Community especially for the "low 63 drop" issue.

I like the size and Construction of the unit, but Garmin should indeed speed up the release cycle to make it a quality product.
  • Confirming the issue. HRM run gets 'spoiled' with 520 and starts misbehaving.

Is there any way to 'reset' HRM run? So I can at least use 520 as an additional screen, and have proper HRM recorded with Fenix3 (yes i'll ride with both units if there is no other choice).

    IMHO it's outrageous.
  • If you disable or delete the HRM run from the list on sensors on the 520 would that give you the workaround you need?

Yes, if you remove the sensor in the settings you can use it as described and the data on F3 would appear just fine - I did exactly that on my last ride. But off cause it will not display HRM then...
  • Will try it in a couple of hours.
But hey, that means I paid an exorbitant amount to get an extra screen with a few more data fields?!
