External Power pack support

Does the Edge 520 support an external power pack for charging mid-ride? 15hrs in optimal conditions is a little short for a 200 mile ride with navigation.
  • I'd say depends where you mount it. The charging port is on the back of the device, so if you mount it on the stem of your bike then you probably can't charge while in use. An out front mount would probably work fine, and on the handlebar may also work.
  • Correct you do need to consider access to the port. It is unlikely that you can access it if the Edge were stem mounted, but you can access the port if you use the an out-front-mount with an offset design such as the Garmin out-front-mount.

I did an 300 km ride with Edge 810 , no course loaded but with map activated and always display
also I am planning an ride for ~400 km , and I also need external power , the only drawback when cable is disconnected on 810, there is an message for shutdown

Funny, I did a 350km ride the other day and ended up using my external battery with supplied USB and didn't get any message. The screen dims though, but other than that my garmin was back to 100% within an hour (plugged it in at 8%).

Also funny, with the 810 I have a stem mount to move the garmin to as the USB plug can't be accessed when on the outfront mount, so its back and forth. With the 520 this will no longer be an issue.
  • The Micro-USB port on the 520 is centered around a line down the middle of the unit. The USB port on the 800/810 is positioned to one side.
