Edge 520 Plus With Speed and Cadence Sensors on Non-Smart Indoor Trainer

Greetings,

My bike has the Edge 520 Plus installed with Speed and Cadence sensors, and has always worked fine "outside" for rides, showing me all statistics, including distance and cadence.

But now I want to use it indoors on a *non-smart* trainer. I have moved the Speed sensor to the rear wheel. When I start up the Edge 520, I choose "Indoor". But when I start riding, the only thing that is registering and showing on the computer is the *time* of the ride. The distance does not increase at all.

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?  Do I need some other kind of sensor other that these?

Thanks for any help/answers,

Ed R.

  • Hi, with the two sensors installed you should see, cadence, speed and distance without problem, no other sensors needed.

Just check the sensors are activated and paired, it´s not a problem of the number of sensors.

Let us know if it´s solved.

  • A couple of things to check.

First off, does the speed sensor connect when you start the Edge?  You should get a beep and see a speedometer symbol at the top of the screen.  Maybe a dead or weak battery?

If it connects, go to Menu>Settings>Sensors and find your speed sensor.  Go to Sensor Details and see if it is set to manual or automatic.  If automatic I wonder if it is calibrating to zero because the GPS says you are not moving.  It should show a calibration number while connected too.  That number should be somewhere between 2000-2300mm depending on your tire size, assuming 700c tires.  If that number is zero or very small, this is probably the issue.

Also if the sensor is set to automatic, go to Menu>Settings>Activity Profiles>Indoor and check to see if GPS is enabled or disabled.  I think it defaults to enabled, but I turned of GPS for my indoor profile.

  • Thanks, all. I was having a senior moment, realized that the sensors had been on my bike for prolly 3 years, batteries were dead. New batteries = all up and running (I mean cycling) now.

    Thanks!
