Edge 520 giving crazy speed readings

My sons Edge 520 has started giving crazy speed readings when on a ride.

For example, see https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/7118500762/share/0?lang=en where the speed has spiked to over 100mph. This then mucks up the average speed, and isn't good when he logs this into training peaks. .

The distance is logged at 39miles, when it should be lower for that route. On strava the distance is correct, and the max speed isn't over 100mph www.strava.com/.../5620775785 #strava

So it looks like strava is fixing the incorrect data.

The software is up-to-date and the head unit was working fine. We've switched GPS on/off and he has a good satellite lock.

Any ideas?

So, it turns out this is down to the speed sensor. I turned that off in the Garmin settings, and the ride recorded correctly with no silly speed and cadence.

I now need to work out why the speed sensor is playing up, and what I can do about it.

Maybe a new battery?
