Speed and distance travelled stop mid ride for 520 Plus

Had the Garmin 520 Plus for a few months now and occasionally (happened 3 separate rides about a month apart and working fine in between) the head unit just randomly loses speed and distance (I assume GPS is lost). The only way I can get it to reconnect is to turn off the unit and restart it. Eventually it will pick up signal again and continue with the current ride. This first time it happened it was just once and the rest of the ride was fine. The second time it happened twice and yesterday 4 times throughout the ride. At all times it was in areas where I normally ride and others riding with me didn’t have similar problems. I don’t use a speed sensor as its just the 520Plus measuring speed. How can I fix this?

I’ve also tried to check my firmware/software is up to date but every time I plug into Garmin Express it says Garmin can’t connect to the servers and won’t let me update. My watch and my wife’s watch all connect and update correctly using the same laptop however.

Please help!

  • You're not alone, I've been having the same exact issue since for over a year now when I first got my Garmin. None of the software updates have ever helped me. I've noticed it worked without issue when I did a factory reset. I've made observation that the speed and distance never stop when I'm not using course navigation. But when I'm using navigation the Garmin 520 Plus would loose the speed & distance and I have to turn it off and on and resume the ride. (I did that 5 times during my last ride). I'm about to see how many times I skip it across my nearby lake and get rid of the headaches.

I know of no other solution...

  • You can have your display show the strength of the GPS signal.  Have that showing while you're on your rides and see if you see any variation.  If that doesn't work and you say that it worked with an earlier version of the software.... I would just revert back to the earlier version.  That's what I had to do on my 520.

  • FIXED!

I've actually believe I have gotten to the bottom of my dilemma. After my 3 factor reset in attempt to fix my speed and distance stopping instantly while riding. I did not reconnect my very old cadence sensor. (old as in it was my original one when I got my Edge 705 back in 2009) Without it connected to the Garmin Edge 520+ I have now how 3 successful rides and haven't had any headaches whatsoever. So my prognosis is an old cadence sensor was sending a bad signal and was causing some speed sensor issues. I'm very happy and won't put on another cadence sensor - I wasn't really using it anyways. In case you have the same issue, factory reset and do not connect the cadence sensor.

  • Hi when you did all did you just give up on measuring cadence (ie without the sensor)? Shouldn’t be too much to ask for a dedicated device like this to do both?
