Maps and course navigation Garmin Edge 520

I have never managed to download a course and have the course give me navigation directions on my Edge 520......why?  Is there something I should have done when I first got it?  I have recently downloaded a course from ridewithgps (paid subscription so I got turn by turn directions), I put the course in Garmin connect and then transfered it to my device.  Try and ride the course......nothing - no directions no map on the screen, it only tells me if I am going north, south etc.

What am I missing???

Any help appreciated :-)

  • Hi,

From RWGPS, export the TCX (or .fit) file of the course you’ve created and copy it into the new files folder on your Garmin.

Boot the Garmin and go to training>courses and load the course. In your Activity Profile check that under Map settings, Guidance text is turned on. (Leave training>courses>course options>turn Guidance=off)

That should give you a prompt shortly before each turn based on the cue sheet entries and the map screen should show your route.

It’s best if you load the course at the start point and don’t let the Garmin navigate you to it.

  • Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply.  I have done exactly that and no prompts show and not even a map - the map screen shows but no roads or anything and it just tells me I am riding north for example.  I am soooo frustrated as to what I am doing wrong.  I am nearly at the point of buying a new computer!!  But that probably wont help if I cant operate this one!!!  Any advice greatly received

  • Mmmm. Puzzling. Maybe the map file is corrupted. Perhaps try to download an open source map to replace the existing one. Dcrainmaker.com has a how-to guide if you’re not familiar with the process. Keep in mind that the storage space  is limited on a 520. https://extract.bbbike.org/ has an option to select non-rectangular map areas. I use its Garmin Onroad latin1 format which omits street names but has smaller file sizes (installed as per the older 2013 how-to guide https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/download-garmin-705800810.html ). Also clean out the activities and courses folders to maximize available space.
