Corrupt Fit File Repair

Hi

I came back from my ride yesterday and can't upload my fit file to Garmin Connect or Strava.  I have heard there are very nice and talented people on these forums that may be able to repair files - I hope so!  I have uploaded the below file.  Can somebody help?

Thanks in advance

    hi Matt,

got it sorted, only header was faulty, rest of the data is original

removed course part, cut & paste header from other user, replace serial number, add your ride data

    ran this…

    hi,

care to tell the story behind the ride ?

had a quick look at the fit file

header has timestamps in reversed order (hexadecimal)

it is also marked as course file and not as activity

did you get this file from the ACTIVITIES folder on your device ?

  • Thanks for getting back to me.

This happens intermittently and I can't explain why.   For this ride, I followed the same steps as I normally do:

    1. Plan a route on the Garmin Connect website and save as a course.
    2. Send the saved course to my Garmin Edge 500
    3. Choose to 'do course' and complete the ride with the virtual partner - this was a 35ish mile ride
    4. The course was completed when I get back home having completed the ride.  My Edge told me upon finishing the course that I had beaten the virtual partner and it automatically stopped the timer.
    5. I reset the activity to zero the screen and save the activity.
    6. Plugged in my Edge to Garmin Express on my macbook
    7. Tried to upload to Garmin Connect/Strava only to receive error messages

Yes, I got this fit file from the activities folder direct from my edge device.  When I tried to upload ths manual file to Strava I had an error message saying...

"not an activity - The problem is that your file is likely saved as a "Course" instead of an "Activity" file.  These files most often come from Garmin devices - the Course files are used for navigation and Virtual Partner purposes, and can be saved in either .TCX or .FIT format. Because these files do not necessarily reflect the recording of a real-world activity, they will be rejected upon upload"

I have never heard of the edge saving a completed activity of 'doing a course' as a course and not an activity?  are you familiar with this?  Am I doing something wrong in the above steps?

    Thanks in advance

    hi Matt,

    thank you for the feedback

    think your procedure is sound

time for a cleanup operation regarding the amount of courses and fit files on your edge

am looking at your file, part of the file setup header is missing, making it difficult for repair

when there is enough data to recover I will ask a second fit file that is not corrupted

first part of the fit file is your course file

ran this file through Fit File Tools's section remover( without any removing)

  • You are a superstar - thank you so much for taking the time to fix this.

Is there any particular reason why the edge would corrupt a file like this and is there anything I can do to prevent it in future?   I have deleted a lot of old rides from my edge to clear some space in case that was an issue (I have never deleted anything from the device and had loads on there)

    Matt, no problem

only guessing here about the cause

    • the devices have a limit on the amount of files in  folders
    • most likely your fit file was intact until at the point of saving the file
    • clearing space should do Slight smile do not forget course folder
