Navigate to Start with Garmin Routes on Edge 520

Hi

I have a frustrating issue with following routes on my Edge 250. In my case I am using the Strava Connect IQ method to get the routes onto the device, but I remember having a similar issue when I first tried this on an older Edge 510.

1. I get a route onto the device.

2. I start the ride, and it asks if I want to navigate to the start, I say yes.

3. I reach the start, and on the device it tells me that I am arriving at the start of the course.

4. I ride the course, and the base map does show my progress, but I get a message at the top of the screen telling to ride to the start - and it shows a purple line indicting a straight line which I think is trying to take me to the start of the course.

I will head out today and see what happens if I tell it not to navigate to the start, but it is annoying. It should just detect that you are on the course and not tell you to navigate to the start.

My device is running software v13.00 and tells me that there are no updates available.

Any advice from anyone out there?

Thanks

Paul

  • Hi,

I don’t use that feature often, but the sequence I follow is:

    • Load the course. When it prompts to navigate to the start, reply Yes, but don’t start the ride yet.
    • When it prompts that you are near the start, press Start to begin navigating the course.

If you press start before you reach the beginning of the course it must think you are taking a long detour to get there.

  • Hiya

Thanks for the top - yesterday I answered No to navigating to the start and sure enough I joined the course and all was OK.

I noticed another annoyance with it, which I will post as a new question - related to the fact that my route is basically a Lasso shape and when I reached the loop part it gave me no indiction of whether to turn left or right - not a problem as I was following a known route to practice. I guess it would have told me if I was going the wrong way so will try that out today.

  • Hi

Glad you’ve got it sorted. Not sure whether your new issue is a Strava or a Garmin one as I don’t use Strava. I don’t believe the 520 actually does turn by turn navigation on downloaded routes but relies on the cue points in the downloaded file to generate navigation instructions. You might need to check if Settings/Course points are on once you have loaded the route.
