Edge 520 may not be saving files correctly

Long time intermittent problem with my Edge 520 - currently up seemingly permanently ...

Perfect behavior during the boot up and ride - all sensors connected and working well.  At the end of the ride, I press the Start/Stop button > I get the prompt to Save > I select enter to Save > the Edge moves to the 'Recovery Time' screen but for such a short period that you couldn't read it (in some cases in the past, the Recovery Time screen didn't come up at all) > back to the Start screen. The Bluetooth transfer to Garmin Connect Mobile on my Iphone SE (iOS 13.3.1) fails with Garmin Connect saying there is an error (very helpful) (Garmin Connect acknowledges the Bluetooth connection ... just that data transfer failed).  Power cycling the phone and the Edge does not change any of this.  If I open History on the Edge, I can see the ride with the correct date, time and distance (although I haven't opened it to look for more detail).  So I take the Edge to a PC and connect it via USB.  Garmin Express connects, synchs but does not transfer anything.  I open a Windows Explorer window and look at the Activities directory on the Edge and the ride is gone ... i.e. there is no file for the date of the ride (earlier rides that transferred OK via Bluetooth are still there).  Disconnect from PC and restart the Edge and look in History, and the ride is also gone there now.

Other weird things that may not be connected ... The Edge says it has Ver 13.0 firmware and that there are no updates for it ... which is the same message that Garmin Express says when it is USB connected to a PC.  But when you first make the USB connection, a notification box pops up (with the Garmin Express logo) that says that there is new software for my device.  This happens every time it is connected but of course, there is no update to do.  The other weird thing is that when you look at the Activities directory in Windows (Win 10), there are other directories and files with very non-ASCII names and dates in the distant future.  Should they be there? (I fully realise that they may be quite legitimate but that Windows can't make any sense of them).

Help please ... or this thing is going permanently to the bottom drawer ...

  • Check that you still have storage space available, otherwise new activities won't be saved. There shouldn't be anything other than fit files in the activities folder.

Thanks PeterK.  The Edge has complained about storage before and I have fixed that but there were no such messages this time.  That said, I deleted all the existing .fit files out of the Activities directory and the 150 metre test ride I just did recorded, saved and uploaded correctly (although the Recovery Time screen didn't show and the speed and cadence sensors on the bike didn't connect).  I did try to delete those other weird looking things in the Activities directory but Windows went crazy and insisted they were 'systems files' and that I should not touch them ... so they are still there for now.  But it works again, so I am happy.
