Edge 510 Sync failed due to Transfer Error - does not function

Trying to sync my Edge 510, and update via Garmin Express.  Once connected, the system tries to syn, however, I get the message "There was an error installing the update" and a pop-up that says "Personal Records (Transfer Error)".  The Software version seems to be up to date: 6.10. however, this update is not able to sync.

If I try to use the Edge 510 to record a ride, It appears to function: records time, speed, and connects to the sensors on my bikes, however, the total distance seems to be stuck either at 1 meter or 5 meters and is not updated throughout the ride.  When I stop recording and go to Save or Discard, nothing happens - nothing is uploaded or discarded.  Turn the instrument off and on, and the ride is no longer there.

I've tried the factory reset multiple times.  Ive also removed and added the device to my Garmin Express, and have deleted and re-installed the Garmin Express app - but nothing seems to work.

Other instruments (fenix) do not have this issue.

Is there another reset to be done?  can someone help!  I dont want to spend money on a new bike computer due to some software glitch!

I have the same error. The device does not sync, neither with garmin express nor with garmin connect on my mobile, and it gets stuck every time when a tour shall be saved. I tried everything:

Re-installation of garmin express, removing and adding the device to my garmin account, normal reset, factory reset, master reset. Nothing worked. Garmin support could not help any further and does not offer a repair because the device is too old. I received a 10% voucher, though.

Does anybody happen to have the update file (.gcd) for the 6.10 software version? I would like to try manual re-installation of the software as a last chance (before the device lands in the trash bin).

Well this is wonderful - my Edge520 is now doing this ... if the solution is to buy a new headset ... it’s going to be bye bye time Garmin

Update: I might have a working Edge 510 device again, thanks to the help of a friend with IT knowledge. After we tried everything else without success, he connected the device to the computer and removed the files on it. After restarting the device it seemed to have the necessary installation package somewhere hidden and re-installed the software. (I am not sure if this was done via Garmin Express or before connecting the device to the program) It seems to be working again now, at least for 1-minute dummy sessions that we recorded for testing. A real ride is still due but so far it looks promising...

  • I was able to get my Edge510 to work again after deleting the Unix exec files off the garmin drive that mounts when I hook my device up to the laptop. Just backup any files before you delete.

  • Thank you! Deleting these files allowed me to sync courses again from Garmin Express.

  • This worked for me also.
