Elevation Gain Incorrect

I have had continuous issues with my elevation gain accuracy. This only occurs when I go on a hard training ride (lots of elevation). I have a Garmin 520 and would like to know how to fix this problem. Again, this does not happen all the time, but regardless, very frustrating. PLEASE HELP! Thanks

  • Hi user6951714, i am also having the same issues. i was reading some other forum chats about the same topic and they suggest a couple of checks as clear the pressure port hole and hard reset the device. (follow easy procedure on Garmin user's guide)

They also talk about resetting the firmware, which i am still not sure how to do it.

keep in touch if things go better.

    Ciao

  • Hi, I also suggest you check my latest response on this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-520-520-plus/227226/edge-520-plus-total-elevation-gain-inaccurate . My speculation is that it's due to the bluetooth connection with Garmin Connect Mobile and especially Garmin Connect Mobile IQ app. If you could do a systematic test on a short route with lots of up/down, doing one lap with BT connection to phone on and another with BT connection off and compare results.

By the way, I've tried to discuss the issue with Garmin support also by raising a case with them. They claimed they never heard of it, even if this topic is discussed a lot across Edge 520 and Edge 820 forums, so the only way for Garmin to actually investigate and possibly provide a solution is by creating an actual support request with them. Be prepared to have very clear evidence through .fit files for elevation gain being incorrect - above approach having two laps showing very different results should do that.

Please let's hear back when you know more.

  • HI, thank you for the updates. Actually i have evidence of those differences. i cycled 12 days in a row with other two bikers: i was with the edge520 plus, one of my friend with Garmin 1030 and the other one with another brand device. I was ahving everyday 20/25% of less elevation gain, no matter was the day: clear and dry, cloudy, or wet. We also change position of devices, for testing. We went deeper, we updated the elevation positions in the same spots, saving some locations as well. Everything was comparable except for the elevation gain, even the grades during the climbing were comparable.

I am going to submit a actual support request to Garmin, as you suggested.

    I ll keep you posted.
