Rerouting Woes

Hi,

I have a 520 plus. In general the routing over a course though slow to compute works decently. But I don't like what happens when you miss a turn.

Is it normal to just say Off Course instead of immediately suggesting a u turn? This is sometimes is confusing as you think maybe it made a mistake until you realize you're truly of course. Eventually it seems to reroute but not immediately. Is this on purpose?

Just today I overshot a turn as I was going too fast and missed the turn notification. But it never said off course, just the distance to next data field reset from 0 to about 1 mile, so I kept going thinking it had rerouted. When I reached the end of the mile, it told me to finally make a u turn. So it basically made me do an extra 2 miles for no reason just to get back on course.

Hoping to get some feedback on whether these kinds of behavior are "normal" or just affecting me.

All the Garmins (way back to the ancient 800) let you rejoin the route or pick it up in the middle.

I've never found rerouting useful on Garmin devices. It's clearly borrowed from cars, and will send you to Timbuktu.

The “off course” warning happens whether or not you are using turn guidance. It should have happened sooner than one mile.

You can get off course warnings when you aren’t really off course (maybe, you lost gps signal). So, it should be an indication to look at the map.

Navigation works better if you keep an eye on the map. Even if things are working as they should, you can miss the announcements.

What is the outcome when this is done? Does this now allow you to simply rejoin your route?

Would like to see this demonstrated as I'm curious. Does the 830+ rejoin automatically, Or do options appear similarly to the 1030 Plus with "off-course re-route selection options" ?

I don't think the 830 works differently from the 1030. The 1030+ is a bit more sophisticated. (The 520+ is a significantly weaker unit than the 530, 830, 1030.)

On the 1030+ (and the 1030, 830), you get some options to do things with the route but you can ignore them. Once you get back to the route, things work like normal.

The 1030+ seems to work better with rerouting than the 1030. (There was some idea that Garmin would update the 1030/830 to get the 1030+ have features but nothing has happened with that.)

Rerouting is an odd problem because there can be different goals.

The 1030+ (maybe, others) reroute you back to where you left (though, it might give that up after some distance).

The 800 just disregarded your course and calculated the shortest way back to the end point. This isn't the thing people usually wanted to do. So, it was confusing.

It's generally easy enough to just ride back to the route (meaning rerouting isn't needed generally).
