Is Pedal Smoothness available in Garmin Connect?

Hi,

my power meters sends information regarding pedal smoothness and my Garmin Edge 520 plus displays the value during activity. This shows average for both legs, so Garmin displays it as a single value. I can also see the average for the whole activity via Summary in the device.

However, I can't find any information regarding the Pedal Smoothness metric in Garmin Connect - both web and iPhone app. Does anyone experience it as well?

Bart

  • When you say it sends average for both legs, do you mean a single value that is the average of 2 values or is this a dual sided power meter so you have 2 values. One for each leg. If the power is sending the values for each leg the Edge will show that.

  • I have L/R Pedal Smoothness, L/R Torque Effectiveness, and L/R Balance listed under Power in my activities in Garmin Connect. It's just the average for the ride. Are you asking for something more?

  • Bart, what kind of powermeter do You have? (Brand, model)

For unknown reasons I didn't get notifications of the replies. Weird.

Anyway, I use Power2Max NG with Edge 520 Plus. The power meter supports L/R Balance, Pedal Smoothness (for both legs together) and Torque Effectiveness (only via BLE, so I can't get it on Edge 520 Plus).

I am not 100% sure what does mean as I simply copied it from a user manual: https://www.power2max.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/UM_NGR_ENG.pdf

Left-right distribution ("Balance"). Note: power left = pressure left pedal + pull on right pedal; power right = pressure right pedal + pull on left pedal.
Smoothness (note: for both legs together)

While PM is connected to the Edge unit, I see %-% on the Pedal Smoothness data field. However while I'm riding (and PM transmits data) the data field change a view to: N% (a single percentage value - I think it's actual value, not average, but I can be wrong here). This seems to look OK for me as a single value is only transmitted.

In summary of the ride (on Edge) there is still N% (not N%-N% or whatever).

On Garmin Connect (webapp and mobile) I can see graph of L/R Balance and the average is listed under Power section too. The Pedal Smoothness doesn't appear anywhere out of the Edge unit. There is no graph, no average under Power section.

  • I suspect that is because it is providing a single value and not 2 values as would be expected.

Combining pedal smoothness into a single value gives a value with that has very limited if any useful information.

Yeah, I suspect this too. This is why I gave an information about it in the original post.

Apart from usefulness of this information, I would like to see it. I believe in a power section they could show exactly the same as on Garmin 520+ (total average). It could also shows the graph if all values are stored. Why not? Speed is also not very useful and there is a lot of information about it ;-) As 520+ shows it in a ride summary, I am almost sure this information is in the FIT file. It's not just not parsed by Garmin Connect.

What can I do with it? Request a feature/bug? I tried to convert the FIT file into GPX but got very tiny part of data. Any good FIT file viewer?

Just checked in Training Peaks and Combined Pedal Smoothness data is fully accessible. So, definitely it's a missing feature in Garmin Connect. I'm going to request it. Closing it for now.

  • Could you post the FIT file for one of your activities or a link to one of your activities in GC with public access?

  • Garmin does not provide an Pedal Smoothness plots in GC or GCM. It does report the average value for the ride when it has both sides.
