New to Edge 520 Plus - Trying to replace cuesheet

I apologize if this has been asked & answered before - I searched without much luck...

I recently purchased a Garmin Edge 520 Plus.

I have it for exactly one reason - to replace a cue sheet. I'm not checking my heart rate, racing Strava segments, or trying to find the rest of my riders. I just want to navigate.

My routes are generated using RideWithGPS. The routes are prepared with turns and such, but also with sag stops, railroad crossings, etc. All I want to do is to display the next cue (turn, sag, danger, etc.) and the distance remaining to that cue.

If there's a sag in 5 miles and a turn in 7 miles ... I want to know about the sag ... not the turn. Once I've gotten to (or past) the sag, then I want to know about the turn.

I can't figure out how to do this. The closest I've come, so far, is to have the sag show up (sort of) as a small icon on the map and then maybe pop up (? not sure about this) when I'm very close ... like 100 meters. Not real helpful. I really want that sag to show up as the next major element in the ride.

Sags and such are being added to the RideWithGPS route using "add to cue sheet" and show up very nicely if I print the cue sheet...but, of course, that's why I have the Garmin...so I don't need to reference a printed cue sheet.

Any help greatly appreciated.
  • If you download the course as a TCX format there should be an option to include course points. When the course is loaded on the Edge and selected to ride the Edge should add a new dedicated training page that is list of the course points and your distance to them.
  • The pop-up comes about 30 seconds before the point (actual distance is speed dependent, which is useful on a fast descent).

I think what you are looking for is the Distance to Next field, which can be found under the Navigation sub-heading when setting up data screens.

OK. I tried this using the FIT format. I found the course point list by hitting the "select" arrow while displaying course data. That brings up a menu which a course point list option. But that list doesn't seem to include turns. So...still not helpful.

I really don't understand all of this - it seems so crucial to the basic functioning of the unit and yet I just can't get it to happen.

On your first point, I have to admit that when I'm headed downhill at 40 mph I'm not hearing any alerts and I'm not looking at the screen...so 30 seconds isn't helpful.

I think the "Distance to Next" field might be useful ... but I don't see a field that displays what "Next" is - is it a turn, a sag, the end of the route? But there's lots of stuff I haven't found in this unit, so maybe I'm just missing it. Maybe I just need to write an app ... if the data is actually all in there somewhere and just needs to be displayed ...

  • Can you post the course file you are using?

The 520+ has built in routable maps so if you can enable TBT (Turn by turn) instructions it will generate turn instructions based on the map data.

For units that support TBT I only add course points for non-turn instructions, such as water and aid stations and then let the unit generate turn instructions.
For units that don't support map routing I would use course points for turn instructions.

Yes, I can get TBT instructions using the 520+ routable maps.

Right...that's what I appear to have in my FIT file data.

But...I still haven't found a way to merge the course points with the TBT data so that I'm always displaying the distance to the next item, whether that be a course point or a turn.

  • I received the following in an email from Dan in Garmin Product Support:
Unfortunately, due to the way the courses are displayed on the Edge, the upcoming alerts would be to your next turn rather than any available sag stops. We do not currently have a way to display these stops as you have described. I apologize for any inconvenience.

It's beginning to appear that the 520+ simply can't accomplish one of the most basic and necessary navigational functions.

    :(

  • The two list are independent, but you can add the following to data fields to a page.

Distance to Next - This data field will display the distance to the next turn generated by TBT
Course Pt. Distance - This data field will display the distance to the next course point

You could also add the Course point distance as a data field to the map page. The way you would get the distance to the next turn at the top of the page and the distance to next course point at the bottom of the page.

If you are riding a course with course points then a new training page gets added to the enabled training pages that list all future course points and the distance to them.
Once the turn introductions have been generated you can use the top right button to access the context menu and select "Turn Directions"

Not sure if I've got this attachment thing figured out, but I've tried to attach a short test case ...

  • From your course file. Course points and turn instructions lists.
