Help with corrupt fit file

Might as well start a thread for this like they have over in the 500 forum.

I've only had my 520 for a week, and I really like it. The only issues I've had so far are that sometimes the bluetooth requires me to restart on the device to work properly, and then tonights FIT file is really corrupt so I can't load it over to strava.

The online FIT tool doesn't fix it, and then I opened it in golden cheetah. It seems the timestamps are all whacky, where it should be increasing every second, but it looks like the stamps are becoming integer overflows. The data is there, I just don't know of a way to edit all of the timestamps by just setting them as monotonically increasing seconds after they start getting corrupt in the file.

Any ideas?

Hi! Had my first century ride on Saturday, super pumped to look at my data, and of course... the .fit file is corrupted. Any way anyone can help to correct it? Thank you so much, you'd be making my week!

  • My 101 km ride from today seems to be lost but I will give it a go here anyway. The 520 couldnt transfer the ride to garmin connect app in myphone via bluetooth or to my laptop. Had a look in the activity folder and the fit file from the 101 km is 2 kB. Not good. My two recently rides are also 2 kB but they where uploaded succesfully without any issues to garmin connect and strava. I can also see that I have older fit files in the 2 kB size that also are uploaded. What the hell happened and is there any chance to recover it? I saw in the strava live segment that I beat a pr on a 35 minute climb.
    Kindly regards, Niclas.

    hi Niclas,

The file only contains 10secs worth of data and the event log doesn't shed any light onto what may have happened.

How many completed activities do you have stored on your device? Could be time to archive them off to your computer if there are any more than a months worth.

    cheers

I was also only able to recover the first 10 seconds of the ride. Garmin Connect says that this file is invalid and also the two files from the previous two rides which also are 2 kB in size, however they uploaded as usual to Strava, how could that happen? The ride is still shown in my Garmin with time and distance, but I cant open it in the Edge to see more statistics. And it worked fine when I was out on the road, did it just self-erase the ride?
I had lots of space left in the Garmin but still many files from previous rides, I have now deleted almost all of them. But as long as there is space in the unit that shouldnt be the problem, or?

Not much makes sense for me :/. Worried it wil happen again. And thanks for your help :).

I'm having the same problem as Niclas. It has happened twice now and I only have about a month of activities on my device. I take this file is a lost cause??? So frustrating!

    hi MBenton,

There isn't a single data record contained in that file.

    cheers

Hi all, I have a frustrating problem. I cycled a mountain in france on May 10th called Luz Ardiden, but the GPS signal danced all over the place about half way through (please see attached) this resulted in my ride not appearing on the main strava segment i dont know if you can fix it? Shaun (many thanks)
