Help with corrupt fit file

Former Member
Former Member
Might as well start a thread for this like they have over in the 500 forum.

I've only had my 520 for a week, and I really like it. The only issues I've had so far are that sometimes the bluetooth requires me to restart on the device to work properly, and then tonights FIT file is really corrupt so I can't load it over to strava.

The online FIT tool doesn't fix it, and then I opened it in golden cheetah. It seems the timestamps are all whacky, where it should be increasing every second, but it looks like the stamps are becoming integer overflows. The data is there, I just don't know of a way to edit all of the timestamps by just setting them as monotonically increasing seconds after they start getting corrupt in the file.

Any ideas?

Wow, that file really is a mess. :)
Dates from 1990 to 2020, coordinates jump all over giving a total distance of 1,490,357 miles and elevations range from -632ft up to 41304ft.
There is about 1 mile of data that could be pulled out but I did not do it.
  • Lunchtime Loop

    Hi all...

I have a lovely lunchtime loop that I ride along with a number of folks at work...did what must have been my fastest every go at it today.

And the ride uploaded to Garmin Connect just fine, but it hasn't synced over to Strava at all. I've tried to delete it and re-upload it, but to no avail.

If I try to upload the fit file to Strava, it gives me a 'bad file data'

If I try to download the TCX or GPX file from Garmin Connect, I get a file page with Java errors.

Can someone try to fix my fit file so I can upload it to Strava *please*?

    Regards, David.

Thanks for trying. I appreciate the effort.
  • FIT File Mess

The duration is showing as 21004:16:41. This means that the timestamps went into the future. I used Golden Cheetah to export the file as a GCX and then was able to look at it in a text editor. I manually fixed this part w/find and replace for the future dates. It suddenly jumps from 2016 to 2019.

I was also able to remove a powermeter spike using GC.

My 520 is set for 1s recording, but the timestamps are not as such. They start that way and then go awry. For example.. 1,2,3,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4,8,8,8,8,8, etc.. This results in a mess.

I thought to try Fit File Tools site, but it requires a FIT file. If I feed it the original FIT file, the one that goes from 2016-2019, it does not seem to do anything. Maybe the file is so bad, its choking on it?? And I cannot feed it the GCX file, since it requires FIT files.

    1) how does one read/edit a FIT file?
    2) Can someone here help me fix this FIT file?

  • Corrupt timestamps - FIT File Tools doesn't work

    Hi Guys/Gals,

I went for a ride yesterday while running in workout mode. The timestamp goes screwy half way through and the corrupt timestamp fixer on the FIT File Tools site can't deal with it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Theangryibis,

The timestamps were corrupt and there were no north coordinates but there were east coordinates. Very strange. I fixed the timestamps and removed the east coords so there is no map. The rest of the data and graphs plot okay.
  • Thanks Don. :)
