Erratic HRM readings with soft strap HRM

I have a Garmin Edge 520 plus. I use it with a Garmin soft strap HRM. For the most part it works fine. Occasionally I do not get a reading at all, though the Garmin headunit shows that it is paired to the HRM. Other times is shows very low HR readings, in the 50 - 70 range though I am moving at a good clip. After about an hour of riding the readings go to normal (when compared to my Apple Watch).

i have washed the strap and replaced the battery (using the procedure detailed elsewhere here).

What gives? Anyone else experience the same issues? Solutions (other than buying a new HRM, mine is a little over a year old)?

Thanks and Happy New Year.
  • I never gotten a year out of a band from any manufacturer. You can replace the strap and keep the transmitter, check amazon etc, they all work about the same.
  • This sounds similar to my issue - why does this happen?

  • same here. Mine is one year old and started its intermittent behavior a few months ago.

I had same issue. Resolved by buying new strap and sending unit. I had rarely washed the old strap. I believe it builds up salt content and when I ride over an hour the strap gets wet and shorts out. I have soaked my old strap and can use it, but it goes out intermittently. New strap and transmitter fixed the problem.

Many HRM strap problems can be resolved by regular washing. I soak mine in water after every ride and once a week it goes in the washing machine on the quick cycle. I've had mine for over 4 years and it still works well. In the first couple of months of owning mine I had regular drop  out issues which I have not had since I do the regular cleaning.
