So how stable and good is Edge 520 Plus compared to The History of Garmin Freezes? ;)

Folks,

I've been using Edge 810 for the last 4 years or something and I feel it's time to make an upgrade. My decision to purchase Edge 810 those days was due to the mapping/navigation function. Well, lets face it. I haven't used it since I realised that chances to loose my track raises up to 80% with navigation enabled. I basically used the map page to take a look around. After some firmware updated 810 has begun a bit stable. Still not even thinking to load any course as I still get random freezes especially why making some stops/turn backs etc. (without course loaded!). Frequency of these freezes usually increases in about 9-12 months after replacement on the warranty for a new unit.

So here we are. I am seriously thinking to get the 520 Plus but then I am just not sure if it's worth to spend extra money as I can get 520 for a way less amount of money. So, is it worth to pay extra for 520 Plus and using all its features will not freeze the unit? Or it's better to save about 20-30% off and get 520 as navigation is still not usable? I believe the other features such like Group Tracking or 2-3 more are not worth paying more, but definitely I have no problem to pay more for good navigation.
I read some reviews and threads on the forum, found very little about freezing (Dcrainmaker wrote about some random hangups but it was for pre-release unit).
So, how stable the 520 Plus is? How would you compare a stability to the main competitor such as Elemnt?
I feel like the unit features fits me better on Garmin than Wahoo (more power related data fields, coloured screen, maps with TBT feature, already have some custom garmin mounts on some specific bars etc.).

The only 3 points that I miss is:
- data sample rate between 520 plus (1 Hz?) vs Elemnt Bolt (have no idea)
- stability (based on history Garmin is probably worse than Windows 95 back in the days)
- maximum cadence (this is probably the garmin cadence failure as I get random numbers while spinning 175rpm+)

Thanks for your words!

PS. One thing that really annoyed me on Edge 810 was priority of the speed data based on GPS instead of speed sensor. Is it finally fixed?
  • Got mine in July and I have yet to freeze it.

There have been issues, but none of the problems I've had appear on your list above.

The new firmware beta allows whatsapp messages, which solved a lot of issues I was having with the text messaging. Other than that, I'm not convinced that it's a substantial improvement over the 520
