general instructions for newbie - changing data display

I had an old Etrex Legend HcX which I was happy with, except it didn't have enough memory to hold longer routes. So I just bought an Edge 520 Plus, mainly because of the extra memory. I'd like to use it the same way as my old etrex, and for now am not bothered about the complex timing functions, or connecting to my phone. I don't have any of the additional sensors. Basically I want to be able to do three things while riding:

- display time, time since start, distant since start, speed, average speed, and elevation
- show a map with my current location
- Follow a downloaded route

But I can't work out how to do even the first of these, and the manual (even the online one) hardly has any detail. How do I set up the display I want and get it to show while riding?
menu-settings-ativity profiles-train-data screen shows me a list of 5 possible screens. I set up screen 4, which has 6 fields, the way I want, and set it to 'on', but can't work out how to get it to actually show screen 4 while riding - it always shows the default screen while I'm still, then when I start moving switches to a screen with only two fields, time and distance.

Feeling particularly stupid ;-(

  • That is likely because you edited screen 4, but did not turn off screen 1 to 3. Since they're still enabled, it starts with screen 1 displaying which I am guessing is the default screen.

I just checked, it looks like screen 1 has no control to turn it off, so your best bet is to edit screen 1 to look the way you want and turn screen 4 off.

As for map, https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge520plus/EN-US/GUID-2ADCD0D5-D5CB-4C29-9ACB-EE8BA1FDCC64.html shows how to select map related options. I think maps are outside the notion of data screens, and will show either if you're navigating a course or other route and have the option to always display a map, or if you flip through your available data screens using the up or down key at the end you'll find a map page. I think displaying a map permanently eats up more battery. Most people even when navigating a course only choose to display turn by turn direction alerts which pop up and overlap on top of whatever data screen you're displaying.

    Hope that helps.

Saad You're right, there is no option to turn screen 1 off - but it doesn't have the number of fields I want, while screen 4 does. Do you really mean that the other screens are all unreachable, and the whole screens setup is completely screwed up? Surely more people would be complaining if it was. There must be another option hidden somewhere... I hope.
  • Go to the Data Screen settings, click on the first data screen and press the select button on the top item I think it is called "Layout Preview". You're given an option to change the number of fields and to a limited extent the layout . Like if you select six field, it comes in a couple of flavors called 6A etc, which are just different layout of the six fields. Then for each field you can go to the field in the previous screen and edit what it displays.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks Saad, that does work. A bit baffling how this relates to the other screens though.

I wish there was some better user documentation available for this device!
