Speed reading drops to zero occasionally during mid ride

It has been very frustrating to see my speed reading dropping to 1 digit or zero during mid ride. It happens a few times randomly and that would trigger my auto pause to do its job. It's a new Edge 520 Plus Bundle, this issue has been there since day 1. What am I doing it wrong here? Or is it a faulty product?

hi Delson and welcome, could you tell some more about how you use the edge on your bike

would you mind providing us with the fit file from the ride with the speed dropping
have you updated your edge with the lastest software versions
are you using only gps for speed
are you using a speed sensor
what type of speed sensor do you use
where on the bike did you mount the speed sensor
where on the bike do you mount your edge
why do you use auto pause
    ...
    ;)

Thanks for the welcome OnlyTwo :)

    1) would you mind providing us with the fit file from the ride with the speed dropping
ans: yea I could do that as soon as I googled how to do it. Will provide the .fit file in my next post.

    2) have you updated your edge with the lastest software versions
ans: I am running on 2.70 firmware now. Seems like the 3.00 version is not available to me.

    3) are you using only gps for speed
Ans: I am paired with my speed sensor that comes with the bundle (magnet-less). I am also on GPS + glonass

    4) are you using a speed sensor
    ans: Yup

    5) what type of speed sensor do you use
ans: The one that comes with the bundle

    6) where on the bike did you mount the speed sensor
ans: I mounted it on the rear hub as the manual suggested

    7) where on the bike do you mount your edge
    ans: On my stem

8)why do you use auto pause
ans: Because I am a cheater :) I'm joking. I am not a racer so accurate performance reading is not critical for me. I want to factor out traffic lights and rest stop to be in consistence with the other riders I am riding with and also this is what I have been doing.

Hi TrippyZ, ok I will try these methods. My sensor isn't blinking red though, but I will still get it replaced. Thanks.

Ok I will move to the front and go out for a test ride later today. This is my .fit file and I have also uploaded a screenshot of my speed/cadence graph.

Looking closely at where the speed drops to zero or single digit, I still maintained my RPM at 80 - 90.

Will do a test after I shift the sensor to the front and update this post. Thanks.

    hi Delson,

Try changing from 'Smart Recording' to '1 second recording'. There are periods of nearly 45seconds between some speed readings with your device chopping and changing between your speed sensor and GPS readings.

    cheers

Hi kiwimtnbkr, the nearly 45secs drop in speed could be me stopping at traffic lights (there are 2449 traffic lights in my city according to 2017 data). For the instance where speed drops but cadence maintained at 80-90rpm, I am quite sure these are where the problem is.

Anyway, I will try change to 1 second recording too and see if this solve the issue. Thank you!

Thanks! How do you find the code that has all the status of my sensor signal? That 30' could be me resting my weak legs at a drink stall :P

I just came back from a ride with the speed sensor at the front wheel now. I noticed only one instance where auto pause kicked in mid way and that was during a sudden up slope. The rest of the time did not have any sudden auto pause.

I just took a look at my speed graph, and it seems like there are two or three sudden speed drop which I had not notice it. Since my battery is all good, I will change the setting to 1 sec recording next time.

wow...thanks! A lot of things to learn for this tiny device.
  • Delson,

Use the 1s recording (Select Menu > Settings > System > Data Recording) instead of smart (You will have much more and accurate data for analyzis, honestly, i really dont understand why the Garmin use the smart method in 2018 when every head unit, watch have 8-16gb storage... It was ok in year 2013-2015, and before FIT standard , but now its just an unnecessary option, especially as default setting...)

auto-pause: an another unnecessary option , you can check your avgmoving speed in a post analyzis on Strava (it has the simpliest layout for it), the Garmin Connect layout is not so visual and detailed as Strava is. i suggest that turn it off (sometimes the auto feautures cause the most of the problems in Garmins... )
  • I had the same issue just recently, however, the root cause is due to the wheel magnet moving too far away from the speed sensor. What I want to know is why doesn’t the gps override when the bike is moving and the speed sensor is not recording? I just had a ride where the unit stayed in autopause and recorded my map but did not record the distance while the unit was auto paused.
