Edge 520, works fine until bluetooth is connected to my phone, then shuts off

Hi, I hope that someone can help.

I have factory reset my Edge 520 but it keeps turning off after 20 seconds when I connect my phone via bluetooth. Its fully charged. I turn it on, and can go through the full set up (not connecting accessories and bluetooth) and there are no issues. If I connect my phone with bluetooth no matter what the device is doing, it will turn off 20 secs later. This is true if idle or as if I set up to track a ride.

I have tried to see if I can format the device, but neither my mac or pc can detect the device when I plug it in. It can't be found by Garmin connect, and when its in mass storage mode, it doesn't appear and can't find it on disc utility.

any ideas how I can fix this on both counts? I wonder if fixing the computer connection issue will allow formatting to then resolve the bluetooth issue? Could it be anything related to Macafee virus software blocking it?

thanks
Stephen

    Hi

An update on this issue. I managed to format the device (cable issue meant that the computer couldn't detect the device). After formatting and syncing to Garmin Connect everything was fine, until I tried to again connect the device to my phone.

It makes me think its a phone issue, but my phone (iPhone) has no issue with connect with a Forerunner 230 watch and Vivosmart, so there should be no issue with connecting the 520? It can't be an issue of too many Garmin devices? I turned off all other Garmin bluetooth devices and the same issue remains. ie the 520 turns off mid bluetooth sync.

Anyone experienced this before and know how to resolve??

    Hi

Another update. I think this is related to my phone because I can sync the device to my wife's phone, both bluetooth channels and then connect to Garmin Connect. When I disconnect and start from fresh with my phone the same thing happens; ie i connect one of the bluetooth channels and mid garmin connect sync, and before the other bluetooth channel can connect, the Garmin dies.

So its not a formatting or reset issue. Its not because there is a corrupt file on the Garmin, its my phone related? Any thoughts?

Any help is appreciated. next step will be to uninstall connect from my phone and reinstall.
  • I have something going on as well, I’ve noticed strange behavior when my phone is paired. The edge will drop all sensors then reconnect, today it showed some strange zoomed in screen that I’ve never seen before and was constantly announcing that it’s lost and found satellites. I turned Bluetooth off on my phone and restarted the 520 and it seems to work ok for now.

    Hi

I managed to resolve the issue. I uninstalled Garmin Connect from my phone, and then reinstalled. Through a process of elimination I connected the the bluetooth streams and Garmin Connect to see which one was the culprit. Eventually the device stayed on without connecting to Garmin Connect (which was uninstalled again to see if I could get the phone to connect without). Once both bluetooth streams were connected I hesitantly reconnected Garmin Connect, but none of my other devices. At first Garmin Connect would not connect, but then I went for a ride, saved the ride, transferred and by magic it appeared in Garmin Connect with the device linked.

A long journey, but somehow the issue is resolved.
