Basic navigating using 520+, android phone or PC

The guy in the store told me the 520+ is good for navigation, but I worry I have been sold something unfit for purpose. using garmin connect, or any apps available on PC, how do I set up straight line routes. By way of example - this weekend, I will ride from 1 friends house to another friends house, and would like turn by turn directions. I have not saved either location using the garmin unit, as I have not been to either location since I bought the unit. I am happy for the unit to relay what my phone says in a back pocket if necessary. How do I set up the saved locations (or other means of navigating between 2 unfamiliar locations).

After the weekend, I will ride from a location (our weekender) to work (which is a saved location- so I can use the simple navigate to saved location function), but of the 50 odd km, I can ride 30+ km of bike track. How will I ensure that I get 1 of these bike friendly (but somewhat further) routes, rather than very congested/deadly roads (certainly in bike mode, google maps always routes via the bike tracks)?

Thank you
• A bit late, but ...

If you make a route with Strava (PC or Mac), you can then transfer it to your Edge using the Strava Routes IQ app. This is what I would suggest if you have specific route options you want to use (bike track). Note there is another thread pointing out that navigation only works for the 1st part of a route ... https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-520-plus-aa/1370139-course-navigation-only-for-first-part-of-course

I agree that the option of creating way points off device, then transferring them to the Edge is obvious but missing functionality. I have yet to find an easy way to create a waypoint at a location I have not been to, so that I can use the Edge 520+ built in routing/mapping capabilities. If the Yelp IQ app includes your destination, this works OK, bit no help for private addresses, and is patchy at best in my area (Australia). Only being able to use this capability to route to places YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN TO is a brain dead omission for a GPS device with auto routing capabilities - the whole point is to be able to create a route to an unfamiliar place.
• So to Confirm: the 520 Plus: released to support route navigation can ONLY follow the route for the "1st" part (not sure what 1st part means: until the first turn or ??) and will not provide route guidance for the full ride??

This cannot be true. ...am I missing something? Please clarify as I'm considering purchase of a new 520 plus for specifically two features (basic bike computer functions can be had anywhere): 1) Input and follow routes created in Strava and 2) identification and alert of upcoming Strava segments.

Thanks all!

• #2 definitely works, although I note that some people on this forum have reported problems. The Segment screen is different to what I previously had on my Edge 500
Looks like this

#1 Easy to create routes on Strava using Create New Route tool, then load to device using pre-enabled Strava Routes IQ app (most recent routes appear at top of list). I will test tonight and report back on performance of device following route

Segment section in manual is in link below

• Update on Using Strava Routes to import course to the Edge 520 Plus

In the Manual, it seems that Garmin uses two different words for similar but not identical things
- Course: a "breadcrumb trail" created from
- an existing activity, create from menus on device
- a Garmin connect course, send to device via GCM or sync with Garmin Express
- a Strava Route, import to device using enabled Strava Routes IQ app
- Route: a turn by turn route generated by the device while navigating to a waypoint (previously saved on device)

As promised, I tried using a Course imported from Strava (method 3 above) on my regular commute. Initially I had no joy, course showed on map page, but no prompts despite seeing an "Off Course" warning when I deliberately diverted. Later I found more settings (see <www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-5FB6AF7B-6157-4AFC-B82B-C3AEED568646.html>)
> Navigation > Courses > Course Options - this is where you enable Turn by Turn directions.

Since then I have been for two more rides - overall worked well. I got turn by turn voice prompts (I use a bluetooth head-set connected to my phone), 1st prompt voice only, then closer to turn voice and map page appeared with turn details showing.

There were a few little glitches. On the 1st ride (17km, 11 miles), there is a section of new bike path that the Strava Routes online tool shows on the map, but will not route via this section. I created a few manual points to bridge the section, then back to automatic routing. When riding, the navigation prompts tried to route me around this section, despite the course displayed on the map page being correct. Once past the attempted diversion, navigation prompts resumed as normal. On the second ride (different, longer course, 40km), I got a prompt stating that I was at the end point, but was only about 16km/10 miles in. I expected that I would have to stop and re-start the course, but shortly afterwards, the normal prompts re-commenced. No idea what happened here, may be related to previous posts about prompts stopping mid course, may be something else entirely. I have yet to have a look at the .fit file to see if there is anything obvious. The only other glitches appeared to be related to switching between routing along bike path parallel to roadway, and road itself (unexpected right/left turn to "trail"), and round-abouts: the map page always seems to indicate a left turn (I'm in a RHD country), and the voice prompt mostly identifies the correct exit from the round-about (1st/2nd/3rd), but occasionally gets it wrong (1st when it should be 2nd exit).

The other interesting thing is that I decided to divert my ride before the end of the course on the 2nd ride. As expected, I got voice prompts directing me back to the course. Initially these were "in 50 metres, make a U turn", but as I got further away from the original course, the voice prompts/map appeared to be attempting to get me to take a different, more direct route back to the course, rather than simply reversing my previous track (appears to be using auto-routing via built in map data to return to course). I will have to try with a course with a side loop that I will ignore, to see if it directs me to the 2nd half of the course once that is quicker than backtracking to the original point where I diverged from the course ... I'll report back.

Overall very satisfying that it works pretty much as expected, and give me confidence that it will be useful for plotting a route via unfamiliar roads
• Follow-up post on a way to create a waypoint directly on 520+ unit using PC

A bit late, but ...

I agree that the option of creating way points off device, then transferring them to the Edge is obvious but missing functionality. Thanks to allory, who suggested using Basecamp in the post quoted below, it is possible to create a waypoint on using PC, then auto-route to that waypoint.

Steps (using PC, I don't have a Mac)
• Connect 520+ to PC via USB cable
• Open Basecamp on PC
• in the list shown at the left of the map (top section) there are 3 items
• Library
• Garmin Adventures
• Devices

• click the arrow to the left of Devices to expand (if it's not expanded already
• click the item "Garmin Cycle Map [country]", your 520+ internal map should now be displayed

• click the "Device" Menu item (top menu bar 3rd from left)
• then click "Receive from device" and select your 520+ from the dialog box
• your waypoints tracks routes etc should now be displayed in the lower section of the list to the left of the map
• this is just a backup in case you make a mistake, its possible to create a new waypoint directly on the 520+ unit using the next steps

• now click the item "Internal Storage" under Devices in the upper left list
• you are now viewing the waypoints etc on the actual device

• Unfortunately Basecamp search function does not seem to work on this map ... there are two choices
• zoom in to the place you want a new waypoint and use the waypoint tool to create a new one at the desired location, this method gets the elevation from the 520+'s internal map
• use the waypoint tool to create a waypoint anywhere
• click the waypoint you just created to open the details dialog
• Open Google Maps and search for the address you want
• Right click the address found and select "What's here?" from the menu
• copy the lat/long from the box that appears towards the bottom of the map

• paste the lat/long into the Position area in the waypoint details dialog previously opened
• the waypoint will be moved to the correct location, but the elevation will remain the same as the map elevation at the random point you created before
• to correct elevation, right click on the name of the new waypoint in the list to the left bottom of the map, and select "show on map"
• delete the waypoint, then click the correct location again with the waypoint tool
• alternatively (use the Hand tool) and hold Alt while dragging it a small distance away, release, then hold Alt again and drag it back

• now on the close BaseCamp and unplug the 520+ from the USB cable
• find the waypoint you created (Menu > Navigation > Saved Locations
• waypoints are listed from closest to furthest from current location

• select the waypoint you want > View Map to preview route > Ride to begin navigation

You should be able to do that using Garmin Basecamp.
