Very poor GPS tracking

I have never been particularly impressed with the GPS tracking of my Edge 520 since purchasing it in December. At best, I would say it is on a par with my sub £100 Android phone, but no better.
I have never seen anything as bad as my ride yesterday though.
Most of my ride tracked OK, but there was a stretch of over 2 kilometres where the tracking was seriously off. (Up to 80m) - See the attached image.
Riding from the south, it started to go off as soon as I went through some woods. What's baffling me, however, is that the second half of that section, (about 1km), is also badly off, even though I was out of the trees with a clear view of the sky.
The image on the right is from my Android phone, which tracked this section perfectly well. (It was in a soft case, wrapped in a plastic bag, in my back pocket).
How come a 4 year old £80 Android phone can track better than a dedicated GPS cycling computer?
(Note, both my firmware and GPS software are the latest versions. I was using GPS only - until recently I had always used GPS + GLONASS, but some people actually seem to get better tracking with GPS only which was why I was trying it).

  • You say you were riding from south to north i.e. from bottom of the picture to the top?
This looks very strange indeed. I can clearly see a pattern - very distinct in at least two spots - showing that the left GPS track is shifted by a significant margin to the south. Both tracks have very similar shapes, but the left track is shifted southwards both in relation to the right track and road shapes on the map.

(Slaps hand on forehead). Yes, you are absolutely right about the track being shifted southwards, I hadn't noticed that. It's even worse than I thought! (It's about 320m at worst, but gets less further north).
Here is a wider shot of that part of the route showing that the tracking was perfectly OK before and after that section.
  • This could mean that for some reason either the GPS chipset or the edge firmware incorrectly calculated the latitudinal coordinate for a section of the ride. How this is possible is beyond me. Anyway, if this was just an isolated incident, then I'd let it go, blaming it on malevolent magic.
  • One more thing came to my mind.

There is also a remote possibility that the GPS track registered by the edge is perfectly fine, but for some reason is incorrectly interpreted by the software you used to display the track (is it Garmin Connect?).

tmk2 - That is from Strava, but it looks the same in Garmin Connect. I have also loaded the GPS track into other mapping software (Anquet), with the same result.

TrippyZ - As I mentioned above, I had always used GLONASS until my last couple of rides. I was trying GPS only after a few tracking errors on recent rides. (Much smaller errors than this though). I will certainly be going back to GLONASS now.
