Cycliq Fly12 CE operability with the Garmin Edge 520

Having been knocked off yet again I am looking to buy a camera; aka "DashCam type" with continuous loop not an activity recording camera. Having seen the Cycliq Fly12 CE it states that it has Ant+ operability with the Garmin. The manual only states Garmin Edge and is illustrated with the touch screen version. Does any body have experience with this camera/light connected to a Garmin Edge 520?
  • Yes. I have both the new Fly12 and the Fly6. The Garmin 520 does form a light network with both devices when you enable it on the 520. Recording begins immediately when you power on the 520. You can set the light beams to turn on at that time also, or you can delay that until you start your ride recording. The lights will turn off when you end your ride. Cycliq has said there will be a Connect IQ app for easier control of light intensity and patterns than Garmin provides, but it has not been released yet. One quirk: at the end of your ride, the 520 will not turn off the Cycliq units completely: recording will continue until the battery runs down unless you have enabled the "idle power off" setting on the Cycliqs.

All in all, I am impressed with the Cycliq units: they are simple to use and offer a "set and forget" way to record all your rides in case of any incidents that may occur, as well as having lights for nighttime visibility.
  • thanks for the input. I have been researching the two devices and I have another question about them that I don't seem to be able to find an answer.

From coloracer's reply I can see that the Edge 520 controls the lights and by default turns on the recording.

I can not find any evidence that there is GPS in the CycliQ so does the Edge 520 provide, via the Ant+ connection, the recording with any date/time/location information?
  • How is the video quality of the Fly12? Are you able to make out license plates? I have a fly 6 that I got last summer and the quality is abysmal at best, completely impossible to make out license plates 95% of the time. Just wondering if they’ve upped the video quality with the new version.

There is no GPS in the FLY cameras. Cycliq will optionally stamp the recording with a date and time from its own internal clock which you sync/set with the Cycliq mobile app or a USB connection to Cycliq's PC/Mac settings app. No ANT+ connection is required for these date/time stamps during recording.

Location data and other ride metrics are overlayed onto the footage after your ride is finished using a Cycliq app installed on your PC or Mac. First, you transfer the video recording from your FLY using a USB connection to your PC/Mac. Then the Cycliq app connects to your Strava account to get location data for your ride. Alternatively, you can use the free Garmin VIRB Edit software to do the same thing, with the advantage of being able to use .FIT files directly without the need for Strava. This is not documented by Cycliq but I have had no trouble doing it this way.

Yes, a new FLY 6 CE was released early in 2018 which can record 1080p at 60FPS at a wider angle of 135 degrees. I have had no trouble reading plates while testing this ability, although certainly I didn't try all possible lighting conditions.
