Connection to laptop

Has anyone else had an issue connecting their Garmin 520 to their laptop? A friend had a similar problem and had to pay £80 to get his unit replaced (it was just out of warranty), mine is now the same:- it charges fine via USB, I tried a complete factory reset, I tried forcing it into mass storage mode, I then tried on his computer with his cable where his new one works....and mine just wont connect. Garmin support have now told me the same as they told him.....I need to pay for a replacement.

I am wondering now if I can connect it via an any stick? Is all I want to do is upload a new map ready for some longer summer rides.
  • Firstly check that the USB cable you are using is a data cable and not just a power cable. Some cables are only wired for power and not power and data.

If the cable is good check the USB port on the Edge to see if any of the pins look damaged. If they look good you could try cleaning them by applying some electrical contact cleaner (WD40 will do if you have no clear) and working the USB cable in and out around 10 times.

If the pins are damaged the you will need to contact Garmin.

Thanks for the reply, already know the cable is good as I tried it on same computer and same cable as a friend, his works...mine doesn't :-(. This seems like a common problem when I look online.....I wonder how many people have had theirs replaced already? I guess they just wear out too quickly?
