firmware 12.50 battery drain issues

Thought it best to make a new thread for this as the old thread wasn't very clearly titled.

old thread is here:
https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-520-aa/1285167-12-5

Basically several people, including me, are seeing much higher battery drain than normal with firmware 12.50. I'm seeing as much as 30% an hour. Doing a factory reset doesn't fix it.

I've a ticket in with support in the UK - Reference ID: 10702787K0

I think it would help if other people email: [email protected] and reference that ticket number. The more people that log the issue the more likely it is to be fixed

I called today for a second time after spending 50 minutes on the phone yesterday. It has been escalated to engineering but no ETA
  • At least you go it escalated - Garmin UK don’t think it’s a problem

This is an interesting thread. I will be interested to see what you get back. I did a two and a half ride last week and my Garmin Edge 520 was almost flat. It is paired to an iPhone, it was present, and a Varia rear light. I have found the Varia seems to really hit battery lift. I will check my screen brightness. I wonder if it is the fact that the Varia wakes up the screen to full brightness that doesn't help.
  • I have been experiencing the same issue in the last days with my Edge 520 firmware 12.50. Battery drained after a four hour ride. I did a factory reset with no results.

I'm experiencing the same issue with Edge 520 after firmware upgrade. Before upgrade to firmware 12.50 it drained about 7% in hour, after upgrade it loses about 15% in hour. Same conditions, same settings.
Is it possible to downgrade firmware to previous revision?

yes - if you do a search on this forum there are some instructions - best to go to 12.20 as anything newer seems to have battery issues

  • For those that are experiencing the battery drain issue, what is you your GPS selection set to? GPS or GPS+GLONASS
  • GPS + glonass

i do seem to remember somebody having this problem with indoor workouts though
  • It was me with the "indoor" workout. I always only run GPS outdoors. Never the +glonass as I don't MTB. It was the same drainage outdoors as indoors.
  • Thanks. To be burning through the battery that fast either the screen brightness has to be a max and on or the CPU is working flat out.

I was hoping it might have been the recent GPS update that was causing the issue for some users.

The issue does not appear to hit everyone (I don't get it) and those that have it don't always get it every ride.

Do you have a phone pairing?
