Edge 520 randomly stops syncing with iPhone / Connect app

My once reliable Edge 520 seems to have caught the usual Garmin bug of becoming randomly unstable. At least not out riding, but with Connect. Here's the story - can anyone report similar / help?

iPhone software updated to latest 10.3.4 or whatever Apple released recently (which perhaps is the problem)
Edge is recognised by iPhone in Bluetooth, and BLE seems to work fine as text alerts show up on screen.
However, Edge does not sync with Connect app - either uploading rides, or downloading routes.
Have re-done the Bluetooth pairing (forgot phone on Edge, and forgot Edge on iPhone, then re-paired) - no joy.

The Sync Report on the Connect diagnostic says (amongst various code gobbledygook):

Error Domain=GCMSyncErrorDomain Code=2 "Device connection error" UserInfo={NSUnderlyingError=0x17065cce0 {Error Domain=GarminDeviceSync.FileTransferErrorDomain Code=17 "(null)" UserInfo={GarminDeviceIO.ErrorReasonKey=Cannot download. Not ready.}}, SyncErrorReason=File UL: Directory listing request failed, NSLocalizedDescription=Device connection error}

Am I the only one having this problem?
Thanks,
James
  • I get a lot of "phone connected" and "phone disconnected" messages that seem to occur with no reason -- i.e. in the middle of a trainer ride I feel like I will see that occur.

In general though once saved my ride syncs pretty reliably.

I have had to re-pair the device probably 3-4 times in my ownership of it (since 8/2015).

I use an iPhone 6s and generally am on the latest software from apple (including joining their public beta releases).

I have exactly same randomly connect/disconnect messages during workout, although net every time and not often.
My setup is iPhone 6S with latest beta and Edge 520 with latest software.
Never had problems transferring workout to GC either.

Same problem after forgetting/re-pairing devices I am getting the disconnected message while riding which usually entails me opening up the connect app and then it syncs again....

If that is the case then it is likely that the connect app is getting shut down while you are riding. It could be shut down because other apps are running or because the Connect app is crashing. Determine if you have other apps that want to run in the background. Also, do you run another app while you ride? You can check if the Connect app is crashing by going to the phone settings -> Privacy -> Analytics -> Analytics Data. I think the list is sorted alphabetically. Look for Connect and if there are any Connect crashes, see if the time stamp of the crash matches the time while you are riding.

nope,  i get the same issue periodically. i got it again today.  reconnected my device to the phone which usually gets it working again for awhile but not this time.  in the connect app the device is shown as connected (green dot) but the sync symbol next to it is grayed out and wont sync.  if i go to a ride in the history and try to sync it, it starts to sync but states ‘sync failed’
