Edge 520 and running/jogging

Does anyone use their Edge 520 while running/jogging?
I just got it and while it's mostly intended for my MTB riding, it would be nice to use it in my pocket while jogging.
But there seems to be no way to have the activity come up as "Run" in Garmin Connect or Strava direct from the unit.
  • You could use it for running and then change the activity in both GC and Strava to running.

However, the 520 doesn't do the smoothing needed for running and the pace plot might not look so great. Unlike biking, running obviously is a lot slower and the 520 will collect a lot of data that it doesn't try to analyze/modify. Running watches perform a lot of modifications to take into account arm swing, vertical oscillation and all the other oddities that a typical smooth ride doesn't have.

I once had a wrist adapter so I could run with my old 500 just for fun. It worked, but the data didn't match my running watches that I wore at the same time. I gave the adapter to my neighbor who used it for a year with his 500 until he finally got a 'real' running watch.
  • I am thinking of selling my 520 and get the Fenix 5 sometime this year. Then it will be once for all activities.

Thanks. I tried that this morning but with Garmin Connect auto-uploading to Strava and Strava logging to MyfitnessPal, making the changes afterwards created a huge sync mess. I'm sure I could simplify the process by turning off auto-upload and editing manually before uploading but clearly it seems this is not really viable for me. No big deal.
  • they make plenty of devices for both; it's totally reasonable to have cycling specific computers.
  • I actually prefer using my Vivoactive HR for MTB since I don't have a power meter on that bike and don't really find myself looking for numbers on the mountain bike as frequently.
  • I was in same situation 1/2 year ago. I sold my Polar M400 and thought if I could use Edge 520 for running, but found that there is so much hassle around (I wanted to see running info during running, and holding 520 in hand or pulling it out of pocket all the time didnt seem like much joy and changing activity in all sports diaries - GC,Strava, Mytreneek, Velohero would be big time eater and easily justified buying new device) that will be better to buy some simple watch - I run only through winter and dont need advanced info like oscilation ...., so went for 230 (considered 235 too, but I have strap from 520 and as I run mostly through winter, I would need to use strap with 235 anyway, because could not much rely on sensors in winter) and happy with that.

    Exactly.
Not planned to be a runner, became a runner during winter time.
    Tried 520.
Build my own "quick release kit" for it.
Ended buying Forerunner. MUCH better for running.
  • Hike2 can be used to record walking and hiking on a 520. You'd have to still change it to a run, but the data may be closer to what you want to see on the devices itself. Simple Walk is similar, and only records walking, but has 6 customizable data fields.

What about adding a setting in hike2 to let you save your activities as hike/walk or running?
  • I did... then when holding it; it hit my leg and nearly went flying into the river haha...

Got a Fenix 3 way back afterwards lol
