Cant sync with express/connect

Have Edge 520, never any problem until about 4 weeks ago, now it just wont sync with Garmin express at all. It also fails to sync with Garmin Connect mobile app so Im assuming its a problem with the device and not the PC/app.
Have searched and tried loads of 'solutions' that have not worked. Uninstalled reinstalled erased deleted restarted etc you name it but the device still refuses to sync.
Its out of warranty in a month, anyone any quick suggestions, is it a known fault, is there any easy cure, or should I just raise an issue with Gamin while it is still under waranty?

Thanks for nay help :-)
  • I would guess that one of the files it is trying to sync is bad in some way.

I would backup the contents of the Garmin\Activities folder to your PC and then empty it on the Edge.

Now see if it syncs. If it does then it is one of those files. You can then use Garmin Connect and manually upload them or progressively restore them to the Edge until you find the one that is bad.

    Thanks

Thanks for the reply Alan - not quite sure how to do that tho. Do I simply cut all files in the Garmin folder, paste them somewhere on the desktop and try and sync a completely empty Edge with the PC? Or is it just certain folders/files I need to remove and if so which ones?

    Really appreciate any help

    Thanks
  • Go down to the Edge and into the Garmin\Activities folder. Select all the files there, then cut and paste them to your PC. Then try a sync and see if that works.

    Nope, it didnt :-(
On top of that, the computer now states "USB device has malfunctioned" when I plug it into computer.

Guess time to call Garmin support :-(

Thanks for the help anyway, appreciate it

  • Just started having the same problem

I downloaded the firmware today, went out for a ride and I had the exact same problem. I could not sync my ride when I was finished even though LiveTrack worked and I received texts on my 520. Yes I tried repairing both devices after forcing each to forget the other and I also deleted the device from Garmin Connect mobile and then re-added it. Curious to see how widespread this is. This is the first problem I've had with my 520.

I have the same issues now. Thanks Garmin
  • How are you using to sync? Garmin Express?

What version of GE are you using? The latest is build 4.3.0.0

Does it give an error message?

I am using 4.3.0.0 and the error message is, 'There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect'
  • Garmin Express provide a 2-way data transfer between Garmin Connect and the Garmin head unit. Garmin Express caches files on the PC so it could be that a problem is either with a file on the Edge or a file in the cache.

I have seen issue in the past where a zero sized error file on the Edge can require a couple of syncs to get past that issue. Look for Garmin\debugging\err_log.txt. How big is that file?

In terms of file caching by Garmin Express the files are located here on a Windows machine

    C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\<Device ID>\Sync

In the Sync folder is a Download folder that contains files coming from Garmin Connect.

Going up to Garmin Connect are the files in the
    ErrorShutdownReports
    FIT_TYPE_4 - Activities
    FIT_TYPE_9 - Weight
    FIT_TYPE_35 - Segment List

    Is there anything in FIT_TYPE_4?
