Recently I cleared out all my courses to load up some new ones I recently created in Strava. I've had no issues in the past exporting STRAVA courses as a TCX file, draging and dropping them into the "New Files" folder on the Garmin when connected to my computer, but this evening, my Garmin Edge 520 only seems to allow one course in it's memory. I have 4 courses I want to be able to choose from. When I drop all four into the New Files folder, then sync, just to be sure, then eject the Garmin from the computer, when it powers up fully and I can navigate the menu's only one course shows up and there is no rhyme or reason as to which one shows up. But only one course shows up.
This sounds like they might be using the same name so each one is overwriting the previous one. Open up the tcx files and see if they are using the same course name. The first n characters of the course name need to be unique. I would need to check what it is on the 520, but it might be 16 characters.
Alan, that makes total sense so I'll give it a try now and get back to you if that is, in fact, my issue. Thanks for your help in troubleshooting this situation.
At first I just changed the file names and that didn't seem to work. I assumed, then, that there must be some sort of code written into the original file making any sort of file name change ineffective so I went to my STRAVA routes, chose edit, then saved the routes with a new route name with each route having a unique name rather than 4 that all started with the same name though they each ended differently originally. Once I saved the route with a unique name at the beginning of the route name, exported them and then dropped them into the Garmin's "New File" folder, it worked. each of the 4 routes showed up.
You are the GURU for sure. I never would have thought of this fix myself. Thanks
Alan, I did as you suggested, though all I did was change the file name directly, then tried to import them all with new file names this time each one starting with a unique name. That didn't work except one file did load but it was the original file name, not the new one I had chosen so I assumed that the code written for the file name originally could not be altered even though I changed it in the way I usually change file names by clicking once, then twice to open up and edit the file name directly. so I edited each route in STRAVA but saved it under a unique route name for each one, imported them to the GARMIN as usual, and this time they all imported has have my other routes in the past.
Bravo, Alan. Thank you for helping me discover a very curious issue with the GARMIN and help me understand how to avoid it in the future.
Good to know that you have it working. The Edge uses the course named that is specified inside the tcx file and not the actual file name. If there is no course name inside the file then it will use the file name as the course name.
