Virtual Partner

Hi,

We will be competing in a XC Marathon 3 day stage race and we would like to know where we are at each moment according to the
"cut off" times.

I was thinking of setting the Virtual Partner to the length of the stage divided by the cut off time. For example, if it is a 100km stage and the cut off time is 10 hours, to set the virtual partner to 10kph.

My question is, does the virtual partner keeps tracking your speed and distance against your ride when you stop as well? For example in the feeding zone? Because the cut off time doesn't change. Or when you stop, the virtual partner stops also and counts only your actual ride time?
Or maybe there is an IQ app for this?

Thank you!
  • Can anyone tell me if the "Virtual Partner" stops while you stop or continues to advance?
  • Although I don't know for sure, I suspect if you turn off the auto pause feature, and do not manually pause the 520 when you stop, then the virtual partner will keep running. You can easily test this on a short ride/rest loop.

If you plan on running the 520 in excess of 10 hours, make certain to turn the brightness to zero, and/or consider an external battery source.

Backlight is off - it should be ok. It uses approximately 5-7% an hour.

I can't turn the auto-pause off as I want to measure my "actual" ride time of each stage...

    Any ideas?
  • This has changed a bit overtime and between different Edge models, but on the 520 if you manually stop the timer or let it stop via the use of auto-pause then it will also halt the progress of the VP. So for what you a looking to do you will need to switch auto-pause off and not stop the timer.

As mention above the use of navigation features takes a bigger hit on battery life so I would recommend having a USB power pack with you. My own preference is to start with power pack connected at the start of the ride so that you drain that first and then the battery in the 520. That way I don't have to remember to connect it later in the ride when I may not be thinking clearly.

Though the 520 can generate turn instructions they are based on the shape of the course and not the map data. I would suggest disabling the Edge generated TBT instructions and use course points for any turn instructions you need. Some sights allow you to add course points prior to a turn so that you are notified about it before you get on top of it.

I have recently started using www.plotaroute.com that supports this, but there are other sites that will let you do this as well.

So there is no way of doing it without pausing the ride? Is there an IQ app that does this that you might know?
  • I don't know if there is an app, but I will have look in the store if I get a chance. I know you want this information on the Edge, but you can do it post ride. Both Strava and Garmin Connect show moving time.

I am not sure they will show moving time if Auto Pause is off. Will they?
  • Strava certainly does as it computes all its own speed and distance data from the GPS data.
GC also does this as a throwback to when units did not have any auto-pause feature. This is why you have 3 time fields under timing.

Have look at some of you existing activities.

Time - activity time provide by the device (controlled by auto-pause or manual pauses)
Moving time - computed by GC using GPS data
Elapsed Time - total time from when activity started until it was saved.
  • Hey Ari,

Maybe when you stop you can hit the "lap" button, and then when you begin again after your stop you can hit the "lap" button again. This way, when you view your data in GC you'll be able to see your total ride time as well as moving time. Do you think this would help? I'd try this technique on a short ride to see if it suits your needs.

Alan, if I cancel the auto-pause, strava will still display my actual moving time and not the total elapsed time? (See attached pic)
