New Garmin Shut Off During Ride and Won't Turn Back On

I've only had my 520 for a week and done a few rides. Two outdoors and two indoors. On my first ride, which was outdoors for 3 hours, I had just gotten the computer so most of the settings were the standard, out of the box ones except I made sure that it was connected to my phone and power meter. On my next outdoor ride this morning I thought I'd try out the course feature so I uploaded a map of my usual out-and-back Saturday ride. When I got to the turn around it told me something like I was off course and if I wanted it to map out a return to start course. I said yes and then after showing that it was loading the return course it shut off. Now I had been riding with the back light set to stay on so I thought between the back light being on and GPS tracking that the battery had just died. I did think that only 1:30 into a ride was a little fast for the battery to die since I had ridden 1:00 on the trainer with with the back light on and only used 20% of the battery but I didn't know how much juice the GPS tracking would eat up. So I didn't think much of it until I got home and plugged it in to recharge and got nothing on the screen. It's been sitting "charging" for a little while with the thought that maybe it needs to have a certain percentage of battery recharged to turn back on after the battery dies but that doesn't appear to be the case. I've tried a few different resets that I've found in other forums. Holding the power button down for 10 seconds as well as holding the power button and ride start button down for 10 seconds. each one does the same thing. The screen appears to turn on (no logo appears) and then it turns right back off again.

Does anyone else have any kind of resets that I can try?
  • Try forcing it in to mass storage.

If it goes in to mass storage check that the Garmin\NewFiles folder is empty and move all the activities that might be in the Garmin\Activities folder to your PC and see if it will then start.

    Force to Mass Storage:

    • Power the device off
    • Press and hold the lap button while plugging into usb (with or without factory cable)
    • Wait 10 seconds and device should go to mass storage
  • Try forcing it in to mass storage.

    Thanks Alan.

Do I continue to hold down the lap button after plugging in the USB or let go of the button?
  • Keep holding the button until it goes in to mass storage then let go.

Yeah. None of that is working. I'm just going to return it and get a replacement.
