Garmin Edge 520 crashes when saving a longer route with multiple stops

When stopping a ride an then pressing save, the device hangs in this save-screen for severel minutes. After a restart (hold left top button for several seconds), the track is saved and device works again.
I´ve had this 3 times now. Always after a longer Mtb ride where I stopped the riede a couple of times.

I´m using Version 6.20

One possibility is memory is too full. If you have a lot of activities copy them to a different storage device and delete. If you have a Mac the trash needs to be emptied after deleting in order to actually free up the memory. If that isn't a solution reformatting may be the next thing to try.
  • failed again today

    K, I´ll try.
Today It completely failed to save the activity and I endet up with this:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1294777250
The saved track only shows the "rolling to the ride" and "rolling home" section. The main part is completely missing. Again I resumed the activity at these two points. However, during my ride, gps and everything was working fine. It showed me completed segments and such.
This is VERY VERY disappointing, as the ride data is super important for me (yes I´m addicted to training statistics ans social media)!

Any Ideas how to recover this?

Sorry, nothing was recorded for that time period. This appears to be a different issue than your original post about it locking up when saving. For the locking up problem I would definitely try clearing up some memory.

For this one with the missing data I don't know anything you could do. This problem has shown up here on the forum from time to time across different models of the Edge series. I think for most people it is a one time failure. If it happens again the only thing I could suggest is contacting support about getting a replacement.

Had anything happened at the point where the data is missing? did you press stop/start, did the unit power down or anything like that.
  • thx

Thx for your reply. Yes, sry, this are probably unrelated issues. I deleted 12mb of activity data giving me a total of 56mb of free space.

Yes, the unit has switched itself off at both the start and the end of the missing ride. I restarted the device and pressed the record button in the bottom right to resume the activity. As said, signal and all sensors showed up correctly at all time during the ride.

I don´t know if this might be related. But on my second commute today, there was nothing recorded at all:
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1295986487
Again, during the ride, speed and cadence sowed up correctly and I did not see any notifications about gps issues.
    Any ideas about this?

Maybe I really have to reset the unit :-( ?

Can you post the FIT files for the two rides? The uploader is a little funky so using Dropbox or another site and posting the link my work better.
The FIT files are in the Activity folder on the Edge. If you have deleted them from the Edge you can download the Original file from Garmin Connect.

The first file with the gap in the data is an apparent software bug where the event log shows the Edge was powered down when it wasn't. That results is data not getting recorded during that period. Garmin has been made aware of the bug. If an auto power down is the common event that causes it, that would be good for them to know. The Auto Sleep function is probably causing the shut down. You can disable that in the settings for each profile under Auto Features.

For the second file with no data, the timer stopped immediately after starting. It was like the start/stop was double triggered. But there should have been a dialog asking to save if that happened. I haven't seen any posts where this has happened. If a ride is stopped after being started there will be red frame around the screen. There is a yellow frame when it auto-pauses.
  • #1 ok, I turned the auto-sleep off. Was searching for this setting anyway. Hope it does not happen again now. Really would have loved to have that ride recorded. If it happens I´ll send you the file + description again.

#2 Strange: I do not have auto pause on. Not 100% sure I did not double click the record button. However, the activity said it ran for 30 minutes. Before I stopped the ride, it said distance 0, but it was recording and showed speed. When I stopped the ride it said something like 4xxxxx km of total distance. Then looking at the file I ended up with 0.

I believe the one problem with the gap in the data is a software bug but for the other two I would be concerned that there is something wrong with your unit. Although the memory being too full has been an issue with the Edge series, I don't know if that is the case for the 520 and your memory wasn't that full. For the ride with no data, the timer just immediately stopped. I don't know why that would happen other than some kind of corruption in the software. You might want to contact support to see about getting a replacement. Or maybe you could try reformatting.
  • problem occured again

K, I got along with my 520 quite well for the last months. However today I got something like the second error again :-( :-(

I rode for a longer time (130+ k) then stopped and turned the device off. Turned it on after a coffee and continued to ride. Then when pressing save, the device crashed. After a restart, the device showed the correct kilometers in the history. However, I could not access the ride details on the device. When connecting the device to PC and trying to sync, Garmin express showed an error: "Some files could not be uploaded to Garmin Connect. You may want to manually remove these files from your device..." (see screenshot).
I was able to repair the .fit file, but it was missing the last part of the ride (little before my stop). Also on the device there was a *.bak file from when the crash happened.

I attached the files. Please have a look at them. I really like to know what the problem is here. Seems to happen with long rides+stops where the device is turned off.
This is very unpleasant, as speacially these are the rides that are important to me. So please try to find the software bug, or send me a new unit, if it is hardware related.
