Start a course when cycling

Hi,
1) Is it possible to start recording after few kilometers. I will participate to a ride and the official start is at km 4 . I would like to start recording a course from this point (when I am already cycling). It is just simple as to push 1 button ?
2) lets say next year I want to use the data of this course to know how late I am during the actual course. Is it simple to start the previously recorded course when the new course is being recorded from km.4 ?
  • 1. Yes. But make sure it finds satellites prior to pushing button (open the page with data but do not start recording)
    2. Not sure.
I would create a strava segment (private or not - need to check if private works this way, set it to personal pr, that makes strava to show analysis and also Garmin site LM show live feedback
  • For me this does not work. When I start a point further down the course and not at the starting point, I do not get turn directions anymore. It just says it's 120km till the end. This is incredible anoying and doesn't make sense. Garmin should understand I'm on course although not at the start, or at least ask me what I want. Garmin Forums

  • One out of many reasons why I moved over to Hammerhead Karoo 2 Slight smile

  • I’ve reloaded a course (RWGPS tcx) part way through a ride and the cues etc worked as expected from that point on, so perhaps it’s a settings issue. Try checking the following:

Under Activity Profile > Map settings, set Guidance text = ON.

Under Training>Courses>Course Options set Turn Guidance=OFF.

Under Course Settings set Course Points = ON otherwise no turn by turn cues will be generated. (Note this option only appears when a course is loaded).

If you’re not at the start when loading the course, don’t select Ride until ready to start to avoid unintentionally starting the recording time and don’t let the Garmin navigate to it.

  • "Course" is something you are following to navigate.

You can start recording an activity (a ride) any time you like. Some units will pester you about starting to record.

You could record the first 4 km and save that as a ride. Then, you could record the official ride as a new ride.

You can have the device convert an activity (a recorded ride) into a course.

You can then use that course to navigate or use the virtual partner to "compete" with yourself from the earlier ride.

  • If you’re not at the start when loading the course, don’t select Ride until ready to start to avoid unintentionally starting the recording time and don’t let the Garmin navigate to it.

If you are close to the start, just ride to it (don't use the "navigate to start"; you don't need it).

If you need to navigate to the start, let the device calculate the route for you.

Just restart/reload the course at the start.
